The Moléson [ mɔleˈzɔ̃ ] is a mountain peak in Switzerland . It is located in the south of the canton of Friborg , in French-speaking Switzerland , directly on the north-western edge of the Alps , 8 km south-south-west of Bulle . It forms the northernmost corner of a mountain range in the Freiburg Pre-Alps , almost south-north , which begins at Col de Jaman and separates the Saane valley in the east from the Veveyse valley in the west. The name of the mountain was first mentioned in a document around the year 1000 as Moleisum . Later the names Moleisun (1228), Moleyson (1237) and Moleson (1238) appeared.
geography
The Moléson reaches a height of 2002 m above sea level. M. and together with the south-west Teysachaux ( 1909 m above sea level ) forms a distinctive mountain range, which slopes steeply to the north and east with rock faces. It is the headwaters of the La Trême , L'Albeuve and La Marive streams , which all flow to the Saane. In front of the Moléson to the east are the peaks La Vudalla ( 1670 m above sea level ), Vanil Blanc ( 1573 m above sea level ) and Entre Deux Dents ( 1619 m above sea level ).
geology
Geologically, the Moléson belongs to the Préalpes romandes , the shear blankets made up of Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments. It is a so-called syncline mountain , i.e. H. the remainder of a former fold depression in the pre-alpine nappes, which was eroded on all sides. The mountain consists mainly of Malm limestone . The tree line at Moléson is around 1600 m , above which there are mountain pastures.
tourism
At the beginning of the 20th century there were three competing plans to build a railway to the summit of Moléson, including one from Les Avants ( canton of Vaud ) via the Col de Sonloup and the Col de Soladier , and two from the canton of Friborg. However, these projects were not implemented.
The well-known panoramic mountain is now accessible by a cable car . From the holiday village of Moléson-Village at its northeastern foot , a funicular first takes you to the height of Plan-Francey ( 1517 m above sea level ) and then a cable car to the summit. From Plan-Francey there is also a via ferrata that is subject to a fee and contains a lot of iron, leading up through the north-west face of the north summit. The nearby peak of La Vudalla was previously also accessible by a cable car. However, this has been canceled since 2001. The Moléson massif is a popular hiking and skiing area. In the summit restaurant there is an observatory with four telescopes for amateur astronomers.
