Tha Carter V is the twelfth studio album of American rapper Lil Wayne . It was released on September 28, 2018 by Young Money Entertainment , Republic Records, and Universal Music Group . Features on the album include XXXTentacion , Travis Scott , Nicki Minaj , Kendrick Lamar , Sosamann, Wayne's daughter Reginae Carter, Snoop Dogg , Ashanti , Mack Maine, and Nivea .

Originally it was planned to release Tha Carter V in 2014. However, there were several disputes between Lil Wayne and Cash Money Records as well as numerous personal disputes with the label boss Birdman . After a lengthy legal battle, Lil Wayne was released from his contract with Cash Money Records in June 2018. He then announced the release of the album in September. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 charts with the second most streams on an album in its first week.

In November 2012, Lil Wayne announced that Tha Carter V would be his last album. He previously said he would retire at age 35 and stated that he has four children and that he feels selfish about going to the studio.

When asked about Tha Carter V in May 2014, Lil Wayne said the album was about "growth" and that his music should be "personal."

Recording and production

In May 2014, Lil Wayne's longtime record producer, former cash-money artist Mannie Fresh , announced that he would be working with Wayne again at Tha Carter V. The collaboration marks the first time in 10 years that Fresh and Wayne worked together after Wayne released Tha Carter in 2004 and Fresh subsequently cut ties with Cash Money Records. In May 2014, producer and rapper Soulja Boy , who previously produced "Wowzerz" of I Am Not A Human Being II (2013) for Lil Wayne, announced that he was working with Wayne on the fifth episode of the Tha Carter series. In June 2014, record producer Mike Will Made It revealed he had produced three recordings for Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V. In July 2014, Lil Wayne's employee at DVLP confirmed that he had produced songs for Tha Carter V. On the red carpet for the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards in California on August 24, West Coast hip-hop producer DJ Mustard confirmed to MTV that Lil Wayne was rapping over one of his beats on the album. In April 2016, the New York record producer revealed Myles William of Arizona State Press that he would produce a song for Tha Carter V.

Many of Tha Carter V's songs were recorded years before the album was released. "Mona Lisa" with Kendrick Lamar was recorded in 2014 and should appear on the 2014 album. The song was teased after Martin Shkreli was able to acquire the project in 2016 and the song was played on livestream. The song "What About Me" was originally with Drake and was recorded in 2015. Post Malone was supposed to be added to the song in the week before it was released, even though it wasn't in the final release, possibly due to the verse that was not finished.

Tha Carter V was mastered by Colin Leonard at SING Mastering and mixed by Fabian Marasciullo.

Publication and Promotion

In July 2012, Lil Wayne said the album would be released in 2013. On October 18, 2013, Cash Money Records Vice President Mel Smith tweeted that the album would be out soon. On February 15, 2014, during the NBA All-Star Weekend celebrations at Sprite's NBA All-Star Concert at the House of Blues , New Orleans , Lil Wayne appeared as a special guest on Drake's set and played a variety of hits. Wayne and Drake then broke the news that Tha Carter V would be released on May 5, 2014. On March 27, 2014, Wayne's manager Cortez Bryant announced that the album's release would be delayed.

On April 28, 2014, basketball player Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers revealed the album cover of Tha Carter V via the social network Instagram , after a few days of speculation. In an interview with ESPN , Wayne talked about using athletes to promote the album, like Kobe Bryant.

Wayne appeared on the Tonight Show and played the song "Dedicate".

Commercial win

Tha Carter V debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 480,000 units, including 140,000 album-only sales. It had the second best week of streaming for an album behind Drake's Scorpion with 433 million streams. The record is also Lil Wayne's fourth US number one album. It is his third album at # 1 on the Canadian Albums Chart , selling 24,000 units in the first week. In Germany it reached number 33.
