History of origin and use in the film Vogues of 1938

Brown came to Fain with the finished text of the love song, who almost completely developed the appropriate melody for the text during a meeting. The lyrics are about the fact that the love is not over yet, but when the singer saw the person in question last night, he had the old feeling again and the moment she looked at him, his heart stopped.

The song is used in the film when the protagonists visit a supper club : There Virginia Verrill (1916–1999) sings the ballad , framed by a tap dance performance by George Tapps (1911–1997).

Other versions

Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm Orchestra recorded the song and stayed in the US charts for 13 weeks, four of which were number one. Also Jan Garber and His Orchestra came with it in the same year in the charts, but only to No. 10. That Old Feeling was several times on the top spot from Your Hit Parade , as in the interpretation of Jane Froman .

The song has been covered many times, including by Ella Fitzgerald , Rod Stewart and Frank Sinatra , who first interpreted the song in his radio show in 1946 together with André Previn in a medley and recorded it in 1947 with Axel Stordahl ; In 1960 he played the piece again with Nelson Riddle's orchestra .

It also became a well-known jazz standard: as early as 1938, Teddy Wilson recorded a solo piano version of That Old Feeling . Other instrumentalists such as Fats Waller , Count Basie (1955) and Chet Baker (1956) followed. But also singers like Peggy Lee , Annie Ross , Anita O'Day and Frankie Laine (in a jam session with Buck Clayton in 1955) contributed to That Old Feeling becoming a permanent fixture in the repertoire of jazz musicians; This is how recordings by Diana Krall , Jay Leonhart and Roy Haynes were made . Tom Lord lists 312 cover versions of the title in the jazz category .

Further use in the film

Jane Froman sang the song for the 1952 film With a Song in My Heart , where she doubled Susan Hayward . Woody Allen used the song several times, both in his films Radio Days (1987) and Husbands and Wives (1992) and in Celebrity (1998, there from the album Getz Meets Mulligan in HiFi. )
