Sheldon shows up robbed and without pants at the train station in Kingman , Arizona 45 days after his departure (see season 7, episode 24) . After he disturbs several people by asking them for help in his condition, he is taken away by the police. From the guard he calls Leonard and asks him to pick him up. He and Amy, who is disappointed that Sheldon Leonard called instead of herself, on the six-hour drive. On the way back, Sheldon says that he has traveled almost all of the US, but never left the train stations. After Amy reveals her anger that he didn't ask her for help, he finally confesses that he didn't call her because he didn't want to admit his failure. Meanwhile, Bernadette organized an interview for Penny at her pharmaceutical company for a position in sales. In terms of content, Penny cannot convince in the conversation, but Penny and Bernadette's boss discover their common fear of Bernadette, so that Penny finally gets the job so that neither of them have to justify themselves to Bernadette. Stewart now lives with Howard's mother and builds a relationship with her, which Howard does not agree with.

The university gives Sheldon the opportunity to change his field of research by receiving a junior professorship , which, however, also involves teaching. Sheldon agrees, but has to discover that initially nobody is attending his lecture because he has a bad reputation at the university. Howard finally wants to attend his lecture, but Sheldon, in his typical arrogance, considers him not intelligent enough and tries to expose Howard through the selection of the subject matter by explicitly trying to find and attack Howard's ignorance. Howard behaves as a bad student in response to Sheldon's poor didactics , resulting in Sheldon reporting him to Human Resources for blowing a bead of paper that he accidentally swallowed, and Howard giving up attending Sheldon's lecture. Meanwhile, Bernadette thinks Penny's learning ambitions for the new position in sales are too low, while Penny is again annoyed by Bernadette's pointers. Amy tries to capitalize on this situation by taking sides with Bernadette or Penny. To her disappointment, Penny realizes that she should prepare and is reconciled with Bernadette, so that everything between the three is soon as before.

Howard receives an invitation from NASA to throw the first throw at an LA Angels home game . During his training with Rajesh and Bernadette, however, it turns out that he lacks any talent for baseball and that he would never get a reasonable throw with conventional means. Nevertheless, he wants to face the challenge and tries a scientific solution that initially arouses enthusiasm in the audience. However, the mood in the stadium soon shifted after it became apparent that his idea was not properly thought out. Sheldon, meanwhile, enrages Leonard with the claim that his relationship with Amy is better than his relationship with Penny according to supposedly objective criteria. Penny is initially unimpressed, but then angrily refuses to try the scientific test, in which Sheldon and Amy did so well. She admits to Leonard that she is afraid that their relationship will not last, and she does not want to have that scientifically confirmed. Leonard finally also admits a certain uncertainty regarding their relationship, but assures Penny that she still absolutely wants to marry and solve possible problems with her.

When Leonard and Penny finally get to know Rajesh's friend Emily, it turns out that the two women hate each other at all, which is mainly due to the fact that Rajesh told Emily about his "one-night stand" with Penny. In the meantime, the boys decide to invest in the reopening of Stuart's comic book store because the insurance company doesn't have enough money for it. However, it turns out that Howard's mother has already given Stuart the money for it.

The boys are planning a weekend when, like in the good old days, they want to invent (more or less) useful things together. When Leonard announced this to the women, they decided to put in a spontaneous celebration weekend in Las Vegas. Once there, Penny receives a message from her new boss that she has to start next Monday, so that she only has the weekend for professional preparation. While Amy and Bernadette party extensively and go wild, she spends the time studying in her hotel room and doesn't put her laptop aside when the other two drag her along to a men's strip show. Meanwhile, the inventor weekend turns out to be a failure because the four are repeatedly distracted from their project and Leonard's appeals to concentrate on the topic have no effect. The move to Leonard's physics laboratory doesn't help either, as funny online videos are being watched instead of working. When finally even a punitive measure he devised for further distraction does not work, Leonard also has to realize that nothing will come of the original idea and returns with the others to the flat share for the DVD evening.

Now that Penny is given a company car, she sells the car Leonard gave her. Because the two of them disagree about what to do with the money from the sale, they visit Howard and Bernadette for advice. When Howard and Bernadette get into an argument themselves, Penny and Leonard make up again, decide to quarrel to avoid money later in their own marriage and spread the money on the bed to have sex on it. Howard and Bernadette also reconcile later. Meanwhile, Rajesh and Sheldon have the opportunity to conduct a research experiment on dark matter in a salt mine. To test whether the two can work in this environment at all, they run a simulation in the university's boiler room. There they have - left to their own devices - a conversation about fears, in which Sheldon admits that he is afraid that his research will fail again. Rajesh calms him down and tells him about his own fears when he came to the United States from India. When rats suddenly appear, Sheldon breaks off the experiment after a total of only eleven minutes, flees the tunnel and leaves Rajesh alone with the rats.

Sheldon meets Dr. Lorvis (played by Billy Bob Thornton ), who knows Penny from work and now wants to ask her out on a date after he misinterpreted a wink as a pick-up on her part. Leonard explains to Dr. Lorvis that Penny is his fiancée, whereupon Sheldon offers the disappointed one a hot drink in her apartment. During a conversation it turns out that Dr. Lorvis has a large collection of movie props and slot machines in his basement that he wants to show the physicists. When Sheldon tells him there that Penny's and Leonard's relationship will fail anyway, Dr. Lorvis calls in the men in the basement and looks for Penny again. You, Amy and Bernadette free the men from the cellar, who are having a great time. In the meantime, Bernadette tells her friends that a magazine has voted her one of the 50 most beautiful women in science. Amy complains about this, in her opinion, sexist article. When the magazine withdraws the article, Bernadette is angry and accuses Amy of being jealous of her because she herself does not appear sexually attractive to others. As well as Bernadette from Dr. Lorvis is turned on, she apologizes to Amy.

The friends find Penny's old prom dress and decide to hold a new "prom" on the roof of the house. Leonard's suggestion that couples usually have sex after the ball scares Sheldon, who has never been intimate with his girlfriend Amy. When he sees Amy in her ball gown, he has a panic attack. Amy assures him that she won't pressure him about the sex, but she wants to say something to Sheldon and thinks it's okay if he can't return it. Sheldon interrupts Amy and tells her "I love you too." Now Amy has a panic attack too. Howard fears that Stuart might bring his mother Debbie to accompany him to the ball, but instead Stuart has invited Howard's second cousin Jeanie, to whom he once lost his innocence. Howard gets into a heated argument with Stuart and tells him not to have relationships with his family members. When Howard's mother calls Stuart, he leaves Jeanie at the ball and goes to her. Leonard and Penny dance romantically on the roof. Both admit that they would hardly have danced together when they were young. All the happier they are today.

When Leonard announces that he is going to undergo an operation for a curvature of the nasal septum , Sheldon is concerned for his well-being and advises him urgently against it. Leonard therefore has the operation carried out secretly because of Sheldon's scaremongering and is covered by Penny and Amy. But Sheldon finally finds out and drives to the hospital where Leonard is being operated on. When the power fails after a minor earthquake, Sheldon is seriously worried and immediately wants to see Leonard. In the dark he runs into a glass door and injures himself. The next day they both sit at home with their noses bandaged, and Leonard reproaches Sheldon for worrying so much about him because he really loved him. Sheldon later receives a delivery with two funeral urns for himself and Leonard, which he can no longer return now that Leonard's surgery went well because he has already had them engraved. Raj is looking for a present for his parents for their 40th wedding anniversary, but learns that the two want to get a divorce and have long since been separated. Bernadette fears that this could happen to their marriage too, and so Howard and Bernadette decide to compliment each other, which turns into sarcasm.

The episode produced shows compilations of earlier "Fun with Flags" episodes. Leonard, Howard and Raj clear the office of a deceased professor and are dismayed to find that he did not produce any research results worth mentioning and that he had no family and that the only thing left of him is an unopened bottle of champagne. Penny speaks to Bernadette about her aggressive behavior and convinces her to want to improve. Bernadette then learns about the developments in the company, which were withheld from her for fear of her reaction.

That bothers Penny, however. Meanwhile, she finds a video with young Bernadette at a beauty contest. Amy then reads a self-written story about a love story between her and Sheldon. At the end, Penny tells the story of Leonard in bed.

At lunch together, Sheldon learns that Amy has supported Barry Kripke in his research on string theory, which is particularly annoying to him because he himself had given up research on string theory because he saw it as a dead end. When Penny tries to teach Sheldon to let go, Sheldon reveals that Amy has recently been giving Penny puzzles to compare her intelligence with that of her laboratory monkeys, whereupon Penny becomes angry at Amy and confronts her in the hallway. Meanwhile, Stuart celebrates the reopening of his comic book store, at which Howard finds out that Stuart has set up free furniture from his mother's apartment in the store. Howard feels this is inappropriate, given that Stuart owes it to Howard's mother in the first place that he was able to reopen the store. While Leonard and Raj meet Nathan Fillion while organizing the meal , Bernadette tries to build Howard up by noting that the success of Stuart's newly opened shop could help him get back on his feet, which Howard doesn't. As all parties gather in the comic book store, tragic news shakes the group: Howard's mother, who was visiting his aunt Gladys in Florida, has died.

Raj reports on an experiment to get people to fall in love with each other within a short period of time. Sheldon and Penny decide to try this experiment and ask each other questions. In the course of the conversation, the two actually get closer and Sheldon even tells Penny that this day is his birthday, although this has been a well-kept secret because he hates birthday parties extremely. Meanwhile, Howard and Bernadette want to pick up the urn with the dead Mrs. Wolowitz at the airport. The suitcase was swapped, however, Howard freaks out and yells at the employee. The suitcase with Mrs. Wolowitz's urn finally reappears and Howard promises never to leave her alone again, which doesn’t make Bernadette particularly happy. During this time, Raj, Emily, Leonard and Amy decide to try out a new trend in which they lock themselves in a room in order to solve various puzzles ( Escape Game ). The puzzles prove to be very easy to solve for the four highly gifted doctorates, and they master the whole task in record time. In the last scene, the friends surprise Sheldon for his birthday.

Leonard admits Penny to visit the sex shop. Then they produce a “work of art” on canvas with their painted bodies. Bernadette makes Howard's tax return, but has trouble deducting all of the Lego kits as business expenses. Meanwhile, Raj has a date at Emily's house. When she has to leave again, he opens a drawer in her bedroom, which then breaks. Even with Howard's support, he does not manage to repair it in time, so he confesses his curiosity to Emily. She forgives him and they both end up in bed. Sheldon, too, can dispel Amy's anger when he signals to her that he would like to have her with him on Mars.

Raj helps Howard move his dead mother's belongings. Because the power goes out, large quantities of frozen food threaten to thaw, whereupon Howard decides to invite everyone to a big meal. Over dinner they want to discuss salon topics, but Sheldon and Leonard quickly get into an argument again over the article. Bernadette finally speaks a word of power, whereupon everyone reconciles.

However, the guard lets them go again. Although they missed their Berkeley lecture, both of them are finally happy to see some of the relics of the Lucas films. The others try to dissolve Mrs. Wolowitz's household. Howard doesn't want to break away from the space-time machine from Doctor Who ( TARDIS ). Then Penny (later Raj) against Raj (later Amy) play a table tennis match on behalf of Bernadette and Howard. When the score is decisive, Bernadette persuades Amy to lose on purpose so that she can use the TARDIS to lure Sheldon into her bedroom, which however fails.

Sheldon is not invited to a symposium at Richard Feynman's house and is in an extremely bad mood. The relationship evening with Amy also suffers from this. However, she manages to persuade Sheldon to build a fort out of sheets. He is so excited that he spontaneously suspends the relationship agreement and Amy's first night at Sheldon's. Bernadette, Howard and Raj think about redesigning Wolowitz's house. A young man bursts in, claiming to be Howard's half-brother. Everyone is initially against him and doubts this. However, when Howard discovers surprising similarities, the relationship is established for him. Penny and Leonard take part in a podcast with Wil Wheaton. This leads to a dispute between them, as Penny is considering taking on a B-film role in addition to her job. It also turns out that she earns far more than Leonard and has successfully invested her money in stocks. He is almost ready now to agree to the film role. However, Will makes it clear to him that Penny has moved on.

The aliens find the news and think Sheldon looks delicious. Penny is unsure whether she should start her career as an actress again. She wants to ask Sheldon for advice, but he doesn't want to, because people think he's too controlling. Penny still manages to do it with a trick. But the audition shows Penny that she no longer likes dealing with her competitors. She then thanks Bernadette for helping her with her job as a pharmaceutical representative and invites her and Amy to dinner.

Meanwhile, Leonard is supposed to fly to his old school, but the start of the machine is canceled. So Penny calls the school and Leonard gives his speech on Skype.

Also, Leonard is jealous because Sheldon is showered not only with the love of his mother, but also with the admiration of his own. Sheldon uses his influence on Leonard's mother to get her to treat her son differently. After the two mothers have reconciled, Leonard's mother actually tries to give her son a hug, which, of course, turns out to be stiff if untrained. Meanwhile, Bernadette tries to raise Howard, Steward and Raj, who act like lazy teenagers, to help in the household, which they get awkwardly involved in.

He doesn't understand her anger about it and seeks advice from Leonard and Penny. When they explain to him that Amy does not agree with the pace of the relationship, Sheldon rides on it for so long that Leonard and Penny have no wedding date either, until the two spontaneously leave to get married in Las Vegas. During the journey, the two of them got into a crisis when Leonard confessed that he kissed another woman on his expedition on the ship. Meanwhile, Raj begins to doubt his relationship with Emily, as she gradually scares him with her passion for unusual things. Nevertheless, he confesses his love to her at a picnic in the cemetery. Meanwhile, Bernadette and Howard decide to finally urge Steward to move out, but they can't bring it to the heart when it turns out that it is his birthday. Sheldon seeks conversation with Amy, but she interrupts him and describes the relationship with Sheldon as a challenge and a test of patience and that although she loves him, she wants to gain distance so that she can reassess her situation. She ends the conversation and Sheldon turns to the Gollum figure on his desk: “Well Gollum, you're an expert on rings. What do I do with this one now? ”The season ends when Sheldon pulls an engagement ring out of his drawer.
