The second season of the US sitcom The Big Bang Theory celebrated its premiere on 22 September 2008 at the transmitter CBS . The final was broadcast on May 11, 2009. In Germany, the second season was broadcast from October 10, 2009 to December 19, 2009 on ProSieben .

The relationship between Penny and Leonard quickly cools down again when Penny gets the impression that she is not educated enough for Leonard. She confides this to Sheldon, who from then on constantly fears that he will betray himself to Leonard and therefore decides to move out. But neither Rajesh nor Howard can stand him as a new roommate. Even Howard's attempt to calm him down with his mother's Valium fails and he therefore brings Sheldon back to the flat. Leonard takes advantage of Sheldon's condition to get the secret out of him. He decides to get rid of the problem that stands between Penny and himself, but is very clumsy and therefore does the exact opposite.

Penny has a new boyfriend and the abandoned Leonard decides to move on to a new relationship as well. When Leslie Winkle tries to start a "serious relationship" with him, he agrees to it, much to the annoyance of Sheldon, who doesn't like Leslie Winkle. His anger is heightened when Leonard demands privacy for Leslie and himself and he is banned from the apartment for it. Penny isn't particularly fond of Leslie's intentions either. Eventually Sheldon and Leslie get into a scientific dispute and since Leonard takes Sheldon's position, she separates from Leonard again.

After realizing her unsuccessfulness in real life, Penny escapes into the virtual reality of an online role-playing game that Sheldon draws her attention to. She becomes addicted to the game and soon neglects her physical hygiene. She also always wants tips from Sheldon, which is why she even bothers him in the middle of the night or at work. Leonard's attempt to bring her to reason fails, so Sheldon comes up with the plan to pair her up on a dating site. Ultimately, however, it is Howard who unintentionally cures her of her role-play addiction.

Sheldon does not appreciate this, unlike the others and especially Dr. Gablehauser basking in the success of his scientist. He gives Rajesh an assistant and a bigger office and the fame slowly but surely goes to Rajesh's head. His friends recognize this and keep their distance, but Penny, who has not noticed his starry airs, is annoyed about it and thinks the others are jealous. She goes to the party with Rajesh on the occasion of his honor, but soon realizes how fame has changed him. When he finally introduces her cockily to his parents as his new girlfriend, she too turns away from him.

Leonard's working hours have changed, so he can no longer take Sheldon with him to university. Since Sheldon refuses to take the bus, his friends have to jump in and drive him to the university. But nobody manages to take him as a passenger and so his friends persuade him to get his driver's license. Howard installs a driving simulator software for Sheldon to practice with. However, he is extremely clumsy, which he attributes to his intellectual superiority and an evolutionary lead over the rest of humanity. In the end, he has no choice but to spend the night in his office temporarily.

After a lecture at the university, Sheldon has an admirer, Ramona Nowitzki, who supports and encourages him in his work. She intervenes more and more in Sheldon's everyday life and even spends the night in the shared apartment in order to be able to control him at every turn and to ensure that nothing distracts him from his work. As a result, his other joys in life are neglected, but eventually he achieves a scientific breakthrough. When Ramona finally suggests naming the new result “Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem” in recognition of her contribution, Sheldon angrily throws her out of the flat and ends the strange “relationship”.

When Howard and Rajesh learn that the models' house is very close, they try to find it using the latest technology. Meanwhile, Penny and Sheldon start a guerrilla war that ignites when Penny accidentally touches Sheldon's food. As a result, both try to outdo each other with increasingly grotesque acts of revenge until Leonard decides to put an end to the matter. He gives Penny the phone number of Sheldon's mother, who makes her son apologize and end the guerrilla war.

Howard manages to get a woman, Stephanie Barnett, into the control center of the Mars Rover . During this action the rover is lost and Howard destroys all records so that nothing can be proven to him - which in the end turns out to be a hasty decision. The disappointed Stephanie takes a liking to Leonard and begins a relationship with him. Howard then ends his friendship with Leonard and no longer talks to Stephanie, but becomes forgiving again when she introduces him to her roommate. Meanwhile, Rajesh and Sheldon try to resolve differences of opinion by means of “stone, scissors, paper, lizard, Spock”, which in contrast to the classic “ scissors, stone, paper ” should rarely end in a draw. Since they only ever choose “Spock”, the plan doesn't work out.

Sheldon tries by all means to ensure that Leonard and his new girlfriend Stephanie stay together for a longer period of time, because unlike Penny, he considers her a worthy friend for his roommate and an enrichment for his own circle of friends. He fears that Leonard could ruin the relationship and therefore wants to help him at every opportunity, but both find him only disturbing. Since Sheldon is not an expert on romance, overall he does more harm than achieve anything useful with it. In the end, Stephanie agrees to Leonard's relationship request on Facebook , which in fact came from Sheldon, who hacked Leonard's account.

Sheldon constantly hears a high pitched sound and fears that he has a tumor in his head. So he gets on Leonard's girlfriend Stephanie and asks her for new examinations. To get rid of him, she claims that he has a laryngitis and is not allowed to speak for a few days, which Sheldon actually falls for. Meanwhile, Penny makes it clear to Leonard that Stephanie has practically moved in with the two of them and begins to spread there and in Leonard's life in general. Leonard notices that it is a bit quick for him and that he does not feel comfortable with it, but any attempt to gain some time for himself, Stephanie suffocates with a woman's guns.

Sheldon learns that Penny is going to give him a Christmas present and is therefore faced with the problem of finding a suitable present for her. He made the plan to buy comparable items in different sizes in order to be able to give her an equivalent item as a gift in return after researching the value of her gift. Meanwhile, Leonard, who is solo again and still in love with Penny, has to watch her begin a relationship with David Underhill, a fellow physicist and winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant . But she soon has to realize that he is an unfaithful womanizer and separates from him again. In the end, Sheldon receives a Christmas present from Penny, which throws all of his previous planning for a gift in return.

After one of his numerous attempts at flirting, Penny puts Howard in his place very clearly. This hurts him so much that he crawls into his room and no longer even helps his friends who are preparing for a robot fighting tournament. At Leonard's request, Penny apologizes to Howard, who tells her his life story. For the first time she shows understanding for his behavior, which Howard misinterprets, with unpleasant consequences for him. The team, especially Sheldon, meanwhile lets Barry Kripke provoke a robot duel. They have to learn painfully that their robot is far from invincible - and that arrogance in advance is not exactly helpful.

In order to advance his research, Sheldon needs the Open Science Grid Computer , which is administered by Barry Kripke. When he learns that Kripke allegedly prefers to let his friends use the grid, Sheldon tries to make friends with Kripke. Since he does not really succeed in this at first, he begins studies on the nature of friendship and finally generates the perfect algorithm for making friends from a children's book. Eventually his efforts show success, but when it turns out that Kripke has no influence on the allocation of the computing time, Sheldon ends the new friendship again.

With Penny defaulting on some bills, Sheldon decides to borrow her money. He sees no problem in this at all and does not expect any repayment soon, since he does not need the money anyway. Penny, on the other hand, is always tense from now on and believes behind harmless statements by Sheldon that she can hear hidden innuendos that she should repay the money. Leonard and Penny take stock of her financial condition and discover that a significant portion of the lack of money comes from paying Kurt's (Penny's ex-boyfriend) parking ticket. He decides to collect this money from him with the help of the others, but Leonard and his friends are not very impressed.

Leonard's mother Beverly, an expert in the field of psychoanalysis , visits. She and Leonard are estranged from each other because Beverly is emotionally cold and Leonard does not feel loved and recognized by her. Penny's encounter with Leonard's mother is also not very pleasant for her, as she forces Penny to talk about her difficult relationship with her father and unpleasant childhood memories. On the other hand, Sheldon discovers a soulmate with Beverly and the two spend time together. Meanwhile, Leonard and Penny get drunk out of frustration at the presence of the callous mother, whereupon they get closer.

Leslie Winkle and Howard start an affair after a paintball tournament at several faculties at Leonard and Sheldon's University . This proves to be advantageous for Howard, as it has additional budget and can procure the device he needs. She also allows him a trip to CERN , but expects something in return from Howard and makes it clear that she by no means wants to have a "normal" relationship with him. Meanwhile, Penny finds himself in an awkward position: she accidentally stained the pillow of Sheldon's favorite spot on the couch with paint with one of the paintball guns. A world collapses for Sheldon because he doesn't want to sit in any other place. As long as the pillow is being cleaned, it has no choice but to cope with the situation. In the end, however, he takes revenge on Penny during another paintball game.

Sheldon would like to attend a physics conference in San Francisco with his friends to present his research results. Because of Sheldon's passion for railways, a train ride is taken to the annoyance of others. In the train car, Rajesh (who accidentally drinks non-alcoholic beer but doesn't notice and is therefore not inhibited by his usual problem with women), Howard and Leonard unsuccessfully flirt with actress Summer Glau , while Sheldon tries desperately to get Penny to come to him to send his research results, which he forgot at home, by email. At the end of the episode, Sheldon meets Nobel Prize winner George Smoot at the conference , but he does not share his enthusiasm for working together.

When she tells Sheldon about her new source of income, he quickly makes it clear to her how unprofitable her approach is and of course immediately has suggestions for improvement. It doesn't take long for Leonard, Rajesh, and Howard to help optimize production. Thanks to the website set up by Leonard for online ordering of jewelry, the first large order is received shortly afterwards, which the five now have to deliver within 24 hours, because Leonard was so reckless to offer the option of express delivery on the website. When Sheldon gets tired and wants to quit, Penny persuades him to drink coffee for the first time in his life, but this turns out to be counterproductive, as the completely exhilarated Sheldon is certainly no help.

Leonard, in particular, is taken with the new neighbor and does her every requested favor, while he no longer takes any notice of Penny despite her best efforts to attract attention again. Finally, she asks Alicia about her behavior towards the boys, but is insulted by the stubborn Alicia and a fight breaks out between the two.

Leonard, Rajesh and Howard have decided to deviate from the usual Thursday routine and do something different. You can only agree with Sheldon on a visit to the comic book store. Penny needs a comic for her nephew's birthday and accompanies her there. In the shop, she flirts with the artistically gifted salesman Stuart and makes an appointment with him. Leonard feels bad because he feels equal to Stuart and asks Howard (who has once again bragged about his alleged success with women) to take him to a bar to meet women there. Together with Rajesh, the two go to a bar - without the desired success. But Penny's date with Stuart is not going as planned either, thanks to Sheldon, who involves Stuart in a professional discussion about comics.

Howard is depressed that Leslie has ended the affair with him. To get some encouragement, Sheldon suggests going to Las Vegas . Leonard, Rajesh and Howard are enthusiastic about the idea, but Sheldon stays at home and looks forward to having the apartment to himself and not being disturbed by anyone. He locks himself out of the apartment, Penny no longer has the spare key and the caretaker cannot come until the next day. So he has to spend the evening with Penny and finally sleeps in her bed because her sofa is too small for him. Meanwhile, Howard hides in a hotel room in Las Vegas and mourns his relationship with Leslie. To cheer him up, Rajesh and Leonard book a prostitute for him, who is supposed to pretend to be Jewish and seduce him. Howard sees through it, but still accepts the gift from his friends.

Howard is full of pride about the toilet he designed for the International Space Station , which is being brought to its destination on the space shuttle while the others are constantly teasing him with it. Howard also notices a design flaw that will soon make the toilet inoperable. He immediately tries to find a technical solution to the problem with the help of his friends, but does not manage it in time. Both Penny and Stuart meanwhile ask Leonard for help on their next date, but Leonard does not want to help and tries to sabotage the looming relationship with supposedly false advice.

Sheldon receives an offer for a three-month expedition to the magnetic North Pole , which could result in a scientific sensation, and convinces Leonard, Rajesh and Howard to accompany him. While Sheldon is looking forward to the upcoming expedition and arranging training sessions for the team (including in the cheesecake factory's cold room ), Leonard's departure from Penny raises doubts as to whether he can leave her for three months, as he has the feeling that Penny is over it would be unhappy. Rajesh's parents and Howard's mother are also not very enthusiastic, but in the end all four of them set off on the journey and settle down at the North Pole.

In the United States , the DVD for the second season was released on September 15, 2009. In the United Kingdom and Germany , the DVD for the second season has been available since October 19, 2009 and September 24, 2010, respectively.
