The Chicken House is a British children's book publisher . Since 2005 he has been an imprint of the world's largest children's book publisher, the US Scholastic Corporation .

history

The Bristol-based publisher was founded in 2000 by Barry Cunningham and Rachel Hickman. Cunningham was previously managing director of the children's book division at Bloomsbury Publishing, where he discovered Joanne K. Rowling and her Harry Potter series in 1997 . The Chicken House was initially a joint venture with the Danish Egmont Group and ran there as an independent imprint . By 2004, The Chicken House was able to completely buy out of the partnership with Egmont.

In 2005 Cunningham sold The Chicken House to the world's largest children's book publisher, the American Scholastic Corporation , which owns the rights to the Harry Potter series in the United States. Cunningham, however, is still publisher and CEO (Managing Director) of as a separate business unit continue existing group's imprints . In 2008, The Chicken House founded the joint venture Chicken House Deutschland , based in Hamburg, together with the German Carlsen Verlag , which belongs to the Swedish Bonnier group and owns the licensing rights to the Harry Potter series in Germany .

In 2007, The Chicken House and The Times launched a writing competition for children's and young adult authors. In 2010, Chicken House Germany launched a similar competition to attract young talent in cooperation with the German FAZ (“ The Golden Pick ”).

In January 2012, The Chicken House founded a joint venture with the children's book publisher The House of Books based in Vianen , the Netherlands . The imprint bears the name Chicken House of Books (sometimes also called Chicken House Nederland ). Since 2013 it has published Dutch editions of all new titles published by Chicken House.

Program and market successes

The books by the German Cornelia Funke with a circulation of several million copies and several “ New York Times bestsellers” are among the biggest market successes of The Chicken House . The authors that Cunningham publishes, some of whom just discovered and promoted, also include Kevin Brooks , Andreas Steinhöfel , Kerstin Gier , Kirsten Boie , Emily Diamand , Zoran Drvenkar , Roderick Gordon / Brian Williams (tunnel), Rachel Ward , Melvin Burgess , Michelle Paver and others.

Chicken House Germany's publishing program focuses on books for eight to twelve year olds, with an emphasis on boys.
