The Distance Between Heaven and Us is a 2019 Greek - French short film by Vasilis Kekatos .

A young hitchhiker from Kypseli is stranded at a gas station not far from Athens . He has no money, but promises a man he met on the Internet that he will be in Athens the next day. There is also a young motorcyclist at the gas station, whom the hitchhiker asks for 20 euros, even if he needs 22.50 euros for a bus ticket. The driver refuses.
In return, the hitchhiker offers him cigarettes and later hashish , which he allegedly hid nearby. A hesitant flirtation relaxes over the question of whether the motorcyclist is a police officer. The Flirt continues as the hitchhiker him two Origami - lovebirds offering. Both smoke a cigarette together and get close. The motorcyclist finally agrees to buy the lovebirds, but doesn't have enough money with him. He offers the hitchhiker to take him to Athens. Since he doesn't want to sit in the back, both of them drive unusually: the driver sits in the back, with the hitchhiker sitting in front of him with his back to the direction of travel and hugging him.

The idea for The Distance Between Heaven and Us came from director Vasilis Kekatos during a tour of the United States, where he liked the aesthetics of gas stations at night. While writing the script, he already planned to cast the role of the hitchhiker with Ioko Ioannis Kotidis, whom he had met a year earlier. The distance between the sky and us was filmed in 4: 3 format, as Kekatos used numerous close-ups in the film. The song that plays during the credits is called Surrender by The Boy.
The film premiered on May 24, 2019 at the Cannes International Film Festival and was subsequently shown in competition at the Telluride Film Festival, among others . It was shown for the first time on German television on November 30, 2019 by ARTE as part of the program Kurzschluss , where it was subtitled.
Awards
The distance between the sky and us won the Palme d'Or in Cannes in 2019 for best short film and the Queer Palm in the best short film category. At the Sarajevo Film Festival he was nominated in the category Best Short Film.
