The Dream Academy was a British folk rock and pop band that was particularly successful in the 1980s . In addition to singer and guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes , the band also included multi-instrumentalist Kate St. John ( oboe , cor anglais and other instruments) and Gilbert Gabriel ( keyboard ). She achieved a one-hit wonder with the song Life in a Northern Town .

Band history

The trio came together in 1983. The self-titled debut album was released in the spring of 1985 by Warner Bros. , co-produced by David Gilmour . The Single -Auskopplung Life in a Northern Town is a tribute to Nick Drake is reaching UK # 15 on the UK Top 40 .

In 2010, the music magazine Spin counted it one of the most spectacular one hit wonders of the past 25 years. In the US , the single was released in the fall of 1985 and reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 . With the second single, The Love Parade , the group could not build on the commercial success.

After the album Remembrance Days , which was released in mid-1987 , it was initially quiet around the trio until they tried to make a comeback with the album A Different Kind of Weather in late 1990 . The album flopped and The Dream Academy broke up shortly afterwards. Kate St. John started a career as a solo artist. A best-of album was released in 2000 .

The "Ah hey ma ma ma" from the chorus of Life in a Northern Town was used in 1997 by the group Dario G. for their dance hit Sunchyme . The American country band Sugarland recorded a successful cover version of the song in 2008.
