The Flame in the Flood is a computer game by the US development studio The Molasses Flood , whose central game elements are resource management and exploring the game world.

action

The young girl Scout is in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States and is accompanied by a dog named Aesop , who can sense danger and fetch supplies. Scout uses a raft to cross a large river that a flood has turned the country into a series of islands.

Game principle and technology

The classification of the game in a genre is not done uniformly in the media. 4Players , for example, speaks of a "survival adventure", GameStar of a "survival rogue-like", and IGN classifies the game as a "survival simulation".

The player must pay attention to Scout's needs such as energy, thirst, hunger and warmth, neglecting these needs can lead to death. There is also a crafting system that the player can use to create new items. As with other rogue-like games, death is permanent, yet the player can restart at predetermined checkpoints along the river.

Production notes

The development team at The Flame in the Flood worked previously with other development studios in titles such as BioShock , Halo 2 and Rock Band . The game was funded through a Kickstarter campaign. The goal was 150,000  US dollars , which was clearly exceeded in the end with 251,647 US dollars.

The Flame in the Flood received mostly positive reviews. Metacritic aggregated a total of 107 reviews with an average of 73 for Windows PCs, 76 for PlayStation 4, 74 for Xbox One and 75 for Nintendo Switch. The GameStar formulates as a synopsis : "An exciting survival trip that brings a successful twist to the roguelike genre with a great atmosphere and clever ideas", but criticized the poor menu and inventory system at the same time. Game Informer's Javy Gwaltney wrote in his review:
