The Great Battle (Original title: Ansiseong ) is a South Korean historical film from 2018. Directed by Kim Gwang-sik . The film is about the siege of Ansi fortress on the border between the Chinese Tang Dynasty and the Korean Goguryeo Dynasty in 645 .

The film was released in Germany on February 22, 2019 on Blu-ray and DVD .

The Chinese Emperor Taizong invades the Korean empire Goguryeo with a force of 200,000 men . The border towns quickly fall into his hands. Thereupon the Korean general Yeon Gaesomun formed an army of 150,000 men. But in the first battle Goguryeo is defeated and only 10,000 men make it back. Only the small fortress Ansi now stands between Taizong and the capital. The Tang Army is advancing with certainty of victory. At the same time, General Yeon sends the soldier Sa-mul to Ansi to kill Yang Manchun , the commandant of the fortress. Yang defied Yeon's orders. So Yeon is planning to give up Ansi and relocate the troops to the capital.

On his ride to Ansi, Sa-mul happened to meet Commander Yang. He senses that Sa-mul is a spy of Yeon. Still, he lets him live as Yeon would only send one more assassin. Eventually the Tang Army arrives. Despite the numerical superiority over the only 5000 strong fortress Ansi, Taizong does not manage to conquer the fortress. With the skillful use of his soldiers and resources, Yang can repel attacks by the Tang army. But one day he is seriously injured. Sa-mul can barely save him.

Tang Emperor Taizong next plans to build a fortress out of earth at the gates of Ansi. This should be higher in order to be able to use a bow and arrow more effectively and to simply lower a bridge and take Ansi. As a countermeasure, Pa-so's troops are said to attack during the night, as the Chinese defense is weakened. But they are ambushed. The medium Si-mi informed the Tang beforehand. She only sees Ansi as a salvation if they surrender. Because of the betrayal, Sa-mul kills her. Baekha, who is in love with Pa-so, faces the seaweed alone, but is killed. Meanwhile, Sa-mul rides into the capital Pyongyang to ask General Yeon for reinforcements, even though he sees Yang as a traitor.

In order to stop the Tang with their new fortress, the miners Ansis build a tunnel. This brings the fortress of the Tang to collapse. Commander Yang can then take the hill with his men and defend it at first. But after a few days the arrows go out. Eventually, however, Sa-mul and General Yeon arrive with Goguryeo's reinforcements and are able to drive away the Tang.

The Great Battle opened in South Korean cinemas on September 19, 2018 and had over 5.4 million viewers. Yonhap's Shim Sun-ah sees the film as one of the most convincing war epics in Korean cinema . The film is visually remarkable, imaginative and spectacular. Yoon Min-sik of the Korea Herald endorses the ruling. The film has weaknesses, but it is very entertaining. The film is probably not historically accurate in detail, for example Yoon doubts that Yang Manchun was in his 30s or that there was a unit full of beautiful women, but director Kim staged the battle in an impressive manner. Cary Darling of the Houston Chronicle also rates the film positively. It is an epic film with heroes, villains, brutal battles and magnificent camera work. Despite the comparatively small budget of around $ 20 million, Kim Gwang-sik made an impressive film. In his opinion, a Hollywood film of this quality would have cost at least five times as much. FilmInk's Jarred Walker describes Great Battle as a great epic full of emotion and approachable characters. It is a mixture of The Seven Samurai , 300 and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers .
