The Horse with the Flying Tail is a 1960 American documentary film produced by Larry Lansburgh for The Walt Disney Company . The 48-minute film is about a palomino pony who ascends to the US equestrian tournament team through a series of owners and adventures.

At the beginning, the pony Pelo de Oro , which was trained to accompany a herd of cattle in New Mexico , is sold and resold, although it is treated badly a few times. Finally, the talent for jumping competitions for the US equestrian team is discovered by the coach Hugh Wiley and the team captain Bertalan de Némethy. It eventually appears in a royal international horse show in London . The joy of training for competitions in show jumping shows the horse in which the ponytail flies in the air with every jump. Most recently, the pony managed to win a gold medal under its new name Nautical at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago .

At the Academy Awards in 1962 , the film was awarded the Oscar for best documentary . The award was received by director and producer Larry Lansburgh.
