The Hurting is the debut album by the British band Tears for Fears . It was released in March 1983 and became a number one album in the UK.

history

After the breakup of the more ska-oriented band Graduate, Roland Orzabal wrote songs that are often quite minimalist. One of the influences was John Lennon's album Plastic Ono Band . A&R manager David Bates listened to demo tapes of Suffer the Children and Pale Shelter and signed the band to Mercury Records . Both tracks were recorded as singles; Suffer the Children , produced by David Lord, was released in November 1981, while the title Pale Shelter (You Don't Give me Love) was produced by Mike Howlett and published in March 1982.

Bates decided to produce an album and brought Tears for Fears together with music producers Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum. Bates and Hughes had met as colleagues at Virgin Records and worked together in the band "The Blitz Brothers". The band's first joint work with Hughes and Cullum was the single Mad World , which made it into the British (3rd place) and German charts (21st place). Bates arranged for the Ideas as Opiates of the British single, originally planned as the A-side, to be swapped for Mad World . The single Change placed in the British music charts at number 4 and the Billboard Hot 100 at number 73 before the album was released in March 1983. A new recording of Pale Shelter produced by Hughes and Cullum was released as a single in 1983 and reached hit parade placements in Great Britain and Germany.

Style and texts

Synthesizers , acoustic guitars and electronic sound surfaces can be heard on the album . In addition to Orzabal and Smith, who form the core of Tears for Fears, Manny Elias on drums and Ian Stanley on keyboards were also involved in the recording. Hughes (rhythm programming and percussion), known as Adam Ant's drummer, also contributed musically to the recordings. The saxophonist Mel Collins and the guitarist Phil Palmer are represented as guest musicians . Caroline Orzabal, the wife of Roland Orzabal, contributed a vocal part for Suffer the Children . In terms of content, the album deals with difficult childhood experiences.

Publication and chart success

The album was released in early March 1983, topped the British album charts at the end of the month and at the same time was awarded a gold record by the British music association BPI for more than 150,000 records sold. The album stayed in the charts without interruption until October 1983 and lasted a total of 65 weeks. In 1985, the certification with a platinum record for more than 300,000 records sold by the BPI followed.

The album reached position 15 in the German album charts and 82 on the Billboard 200 .

In 2009 the band released a remastered deluxe edition with a second CD containing rare and unreleased recordings.

reception

Bruce Eder from Allmusic gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars. The album was an "unexpected success" in England. He described it as "sometimes uncomfortably personal, but musically compelling enough to bring it back across the decades."
