The Hymn of a Broken Man is the debut album by the US metalcore duo Times of Grace . It was released on January 18, 2011 by Roadrunner Records . It was also released as a deluxe edition with a bonus track and an additional DVD .
style
The album mixes melodic metal, often with polyphonic guitar solos, with elements of hardcore punk , resulting in a metalcore- like mixture. There are also some rock ballads , some of which are played acoustically . More experimental elements from progressive metal as well as intermittent blastbeat parts or growled vocals can be heard.
Emergence
Adam Dutkiewicz said he wrote the album "in his head" while he was hospitalized for a back operation and later recorded it at home.
“I wrote it in my head and once I got home and was able to get out of bed and get in motion I started demoing material and felt like I wanted to make a record. It was very personal to me and I ended up getting in contact with Jesse because I don't think I'm the greatest vocalist and lyricist so I wanted a little help in that department. ”
“I wrote it in my head and when I got home and got out of bed and started moving, I started the demo recording and I felt that I wanted to make a record. It was very personal, and I eventually got in touch with Jesse because I don't think I'm the greatest singer and lyricist, so I wanted some help in the relationship. "
He was motivated to play the drums himself because of the fact that the album was very personal for him. Many of the pieces deal with life and love ( Fight for Life , Live in Love , Hope Remains ). It was pointed out that some tracks were holdovers from Killswitch Engage .
reception
Allmusic's Phil Freeman wrote that while the album is aimed at killswitch fans, those who like modern metal and hard rock could find a lot of edification here. However, anyone who expected a “radical departure” would be disappointed. He praised both the songwriting and the voice of Jesse Leach and awarded three and a half stars out of five. On the Artistdirect.com site, Rick Florino's record received full marks with five out of five stars. He called the album a "journey through pain". The album has all the ingredients for a metal classic. Times of Grace are the "future". Michael Edele on Laut.de heard "strong ex-Killswitch Engage boys". The song Until the End of Days “ pull out all the stops” vocally, but also the Southern Rock of The Forgotten One stands out. Edele scored four out of five. Timo from in-you-face.de criticized the closeness to Killswitch Engage and the partly similar songs of the first part of the record. In the second part there are definitely “rousing songs”. He particularly liked The End of Eternity . The reviewer gave seven out of ten evaluation points. Buffo Schnädelbach noticed in Rock Hard the "beautiful, epic-poppy refrains as you know them from KSE". He saw the album as a symbiosis between Alive or Just Breathing and The End of Heartache . His rating was 8.5 out of ten.
