The design of the system was later developed by Dusseldorf planners working in the Sop Architects office of the JSK architects' office in Frankfurt am Main . It emerged from a competition of the city of Düsseldorf, which had been carried out around the year 2000 to develop the headland at the Hafenspitze Düsseldorf on foot at the height of the Hotel Hyatt Regency Düsseldorf , which was built later . The bridge and the restaurant building were built between 2004 and 2005 on behalf of the city for 5.9 million euros. The building is inspired by "Living Bridges" (inhabited and commercial bridges) such as the Rialto Bridge and the Ponte Vecchio , which were shown in an exhibition of historical architectural models in the NRW Forum Düsseldorf in 2000 .

The total length of the steel girder bridge , which spans the port basin of the Düsseldorf Medienhafen between the streets Am Handelshafen and Julo-Levin-Ufer , is around 150 meters, the span between the two reinforced concrete bridge piers is 60 meters and the piers to the bank each span 42.9 meters Meter. The superstructure of the bridge is up to around 1.5 meters high and has a variable cross-section that rises towards the center and is 11.6 meters wide. The three-storey restaurant is located on the southwest flank of the bridge as a "bridge house". It has the shape of a cube-shaped cube measuring 14 × 14 meters, consists of concrete, steel and glass and rests on piles in the harbor basin. Just above the water level of the harbor basin, the restaurant has an outside terrace extending at right angles to the bridge, which in turn is connected to the pedestrian bridge via an external steel staircase.

The pedestrian bridge, which is also open to cyclists, is planked with wood, which creates the impression of a ship's deck , and slopes down towards the flanks through steps, which creates seating. The bridge railings are made of glass. White plexiglass cubes protruding from the planking of the pedestrian bridge and light strips in the steps of the bridge deck are used to illuminate the facility at night.

In 2005, the building won the special “Municipalities” prize of the Renault Traffic Design Award .
