The Long Distance is a German documentary from 2015 about two Kenyan runners who are brought to Germany for one season by a German manager in order to win different races there. The film is the thesis of the director Daniel Andreas Sager at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy .

action

The documentation shows how the formerly successful German athlete manager Volker Wagner brings the two Kenyan runners Felix Kiprotich and Eunice Chelagat Lelay to Germany for several weeks so that they can compete in races there and win them. Wagner himself collects a 15 percent commission from the prize money; if the athletes do not win in order to repay his advanced money, for example for plane tickets, he will lose. Due to his financial worries and driven by his wife Natalya, Wagner, who is himself in debt, lets Eunice Chelagat Lelay run irresponsibly in two marathons in one month. Back in the Kenyan mountain region of Eldoret , the two runners tell their families and relatives about their time in Germany.

During their time in Germany, the two Kenyan athletes will compete in the Paderborn Easter Run , the Kassel Marathon , the Vienna City Marathon and the Mannheim Marathon .

background

The Kenyan Athletics Federation tried several times to stop the production of the documentary because the film was thought to be about doping . The camera team was threatened with imprisonment and manager Volker Wagner's license was revoked. After viewing by the association president, the latter found the footage to be "too bad for television". "The Long Distance" had its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival and received the "First Steps Award".
