Mannheim marathon
The SRH Dämmer Marathon (formerly SAP Arena Marathon or MLP Marathon Mannheim Rhein-Neckar ) is a marathon in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen am Rhein, which has been held on a Saturday evening in May since 2004. The organizer is Mannheim runs e. V., host of the M3 Marathon Mannheim Marketing GmbH & Co. KG. In addition to the full marathon, the competition includes a half marathon, a 10 km run, a duo marathon for two and a team marathon for four to six runners. As part of the 200 years bike anniversary, the Bike & Run rating was introduced in 2017, in which two runners can complete the half marathon route and take turns resting on one bike. Since, due to the late start time, many participants only reach the finish line after sunset, the run is also known as the Twilight Marathon.
Route
The running route has been changed again and again over the years. While at the premiere there was still a two-lap course exclusively through Mannheim, from 2005 the participants ran a flat, continuously paved circuit through the inner cities and some districts of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen am Rhein . In 2014, one section of the route was laid through the interior of the SAP Arena and another through the Luisenpark . The Rhine crossing to Ludwigshafen was also transferred from the Kurt Schumacher Bridge , which was initially used, to the Konrad Adenauer Bridge from 2016 . Since 2017, the marathon route has been running through the garden hall of the baroque palace in Mannheim at kilometer 40 . Around 1,000 helpers from clubs in Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and the surrounding area are on duty along the route to look after the refreshment points and to secure the route. The time measurement was done with the ChampionChip until 2015 , since then with a chip from Race.Result integrated into the start number .
The start and finish of all routes are at the Mannheim water tower on Friedrichsplatz . From there it goes eastwards past the Carl-Benz Stadium through the Oststadt and Neuostheim to Seckenheim . Then it goes on the left bank of the Neckar along the telecommunications tower and the National Theater to the square city on the Fressgasse. There the half marathons turn to the finish line, while the marathon runners continue westwards and cross the Rhine to Ludwigshafen on the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke . In Ludwigshafen, the route runs through the districts of Mundenheim and Rheingönheim and across the Parkinsel.
history
In 2006 the event had to be canceled at short notice after a storm damaged the route safety and another storm front pulled in. Until 2013 the marathon was called MLP Marathon Mannheim Rhein-Neckar after the sponsor MLP AG . After that it was named SAP Arena Marathon . In 2016 the SRH became a sponsor.
In 2014, various runners continued to run incorrectly at a switch behind a double section of the route to be traversed after a poorly instructed helper had given the appropriate signs. Since this particularly affected the top group of men, the organizers named two runners as winners. In the same year, the documentary The Long Distance was shot at the Mannheim Marathon . In 2017, the SRH Twilight Marathon was held on June 4th, the first time on a (Pentecost) Sunday. In 2018, they returned to Saturday.
In 2020, the event scheduled for May 9th had to be canceled because the Corona Ordinance prohibited large events with more than 100 people. The already registered participants were informed by email on March 17, 2020 and given the choice of either having the participation fee paid in advance reimbursed, rebooking the starting place into the year 2021, or supporting the organizer by waiving a refund .
