action

The two computer scientists Ava and Vincent develop cyborgs and humanoid robots with artificial intelligence for the military , which should bring military superiority within a dystopian designed world in an initially still cold war between the West and China. After Ava's murder, one of these robots (“machine”) is given her previously scanned personality. The robot then becomes conscious and becomes a problem for the military with the accompanying development of moral values. The cyborgs and robots free themselves with the help of Vincent.

background

The budget was less than a million pounds sterling. The film was mainly shot in Wales. Caity Lotz performed a number of her own stunts. The Machine premiered on April 20, 2013 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. In Germany, the film was sold directly on DVD from April 24, 2014 .

reception

At Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic , the film generated mostly positive reviews. The film won three BAFTA awards, the Best of UK Film Award at the Raindance Film Festival and the Achievement Against the Odds Prize at the British Independent Film Awards .

A number of reviews mention the proximity to Blade Runner and the music and cinematic design tools of the 1980s:

“The look of the film is deliberately designed in such a way that one feels reminiscent of the SF films of the 80s. The aesthetics of a long past decade represent the swan song for the future. Always accompanied by synthesizer sounds as they were present in the cinematic dystopias of days long past. […] On the other hand, there is an interesting discourse, which of course borrows from the great role model Blade Runner, but has a pleasantly high degree of independence. The film doesn't offer any answers, but it gives the viewer the freedom to make their own thoughts. "

“THE MACHINE is a stylish and gripping sci-fi thriller with impressive special effects! Based on the classic 'Blade Runner', the question is how far an artificial intelligence would go in order to protect its newfound life. Newcomer Caity Lotz ('The Pact') as an adaptive android is overwhelming! The leading US horror magazine 'Fangoria' rightly rated THE MACHINE with 3 out of 4 stars! "

“The mixture of SciFi, drama and thriller is really well done. [...] This film is [...] anything but boring. The fight scenes are also convincing. [...] The mostly dark and gloomy scenes are sometimes reminiscent of Blade Runner and Outland in terms of charm. The topics used, such as the Turing test, are sure to sound familiar to one or the other SciFi fan. "
