The Marrow of a Bone is the sixth studio album by the Japanese J-rock band Dir En Gray . It was released in Japan on February 7, 2007, and in the following months in the United States (February 20), Germany (March 2), France (March 6), and the United Kingdom (May 7).

Emergence

The Marrow of a Bone, like all of the band's albums, was self-produced. Work on the new album began in 2005, the majority of the tracks were written while touring Japan, Europe and the USA during the Family Values Tour . The songs Lie Buried with a Vengeance , Agitated Screams of Maggots and The Pledge were created .

The film Death Trance , released on May 20, 2006, contributed Dir en gray Deity , The IIID Empire and Increase Blue as the title melody and Clever Sleazoid as the end song.

Surprisingly, they were invited to take part in the Family Values Tour 2006. The tour was launched by Korn in 1998 and also took place in 2006. Also there were: Korn, Deftones , Stone Sour , Flyleaf , 10 Years , Deadsy , Bury Your Dead , Bullets and Octane and Walls of Jericho . The Family Values Tour 2006 CD was released as a live CD on December 26, 2006 by Firm Music, Dir en gray contributed the songs Merciless Cult and Ryoujoku no Ame .

The last recordings were completed in December 2006, so only January 2007 remained to produce the album, as the release date had been set to February. Although the work was completed quickly, the production has been described by the band as the heaviest to date. For the album, the singles Ryoujoku no Ame and Clever Sleazoid were completely re-recorded, for which a new sound engineer was hired.

Prior to its release, a promotional website was set up in both English and Japanese, containing video clips, samples and information about the album. The song Grief , released there in advance, is the only one that was given a music video for promotional purposes and was not released as a single. A second page was put online shortly after the album was released, but could only be accessed with a password, which was included in the Japanese release. Information about premium live shows was available to customers who registered this way .

The album was released in Japan in two editions: the regular edition consists of one CD in a jewel case , the limited edition contains two CDs, one for the album and a second for the album unplugged. In America and Europe only one version was distributed, the CD with the 13 songs was included.

Cover

The original pressing of the American edition had a printing error, in later versions the error was corrected and the logo was visible as a whole. The cover is taken from the famous photograph "Grief" by Dmitri Baltermants . The photograph shows the dead of a Nazi massacre in the Crimean city of Kerch, scattered across the desolate, muddy landscape . Village women search for relatives in the midst of the dead under a heavy, cloudy sky. The Germans killed around 15,000 citizens and deported 14,000 more. The massacre was brought to the Nuremberg trials , Kerch was declared a city of heroes .

trip

The tour 07 The Marrow of a Bone began in March , which first led through Japan and lasted until the beginning of May. Then it went to the United States, where they opened between June and July for the Deftones . After the USA, Tour 07 The Marrow of a Bone continued through Europe, where they performed in the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Poland. During the performance at Wacken Open Air on August 4th, video material was also shot for In Weal or Woe . After returning to Japan, a new single, Dozing Green was recorded, whereupon the Tour 07 Dozing Green in Japan followed, which also had a short detour to Europe (England, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland, France). Videos of the tour were released on the In Weal or Woe fan club DVD in late April 2008.

style

The entire album is Withering to Death compared to its predecessor . become harder, the dark and emotional atmosphere has been retained. The songs range from slow, soft pieces to aggressive and hard numbers.

The album opens with the power ballad Conceived Sorrow , which is accompanied by strings in the unplugged version. The singles Ryoujoku no Ame and Clever Sleazoid were also completely re-recorded for the album , as a new sound engineer was hired. With Ryoujoku no Ame the arrangement changed , the falsetto voices were removed to get closer to the rough overall impression.

While Disabled Complexes contains funky elements and starts quietly at the beginning, the majority of the tracks are based on Grindcore and Death Metal . Examples are Grief , Agitated Screams of Maggots , Lie Buried with a Vengeance , The Deeper Vileness and The Pledge , which are some of the heaviest songs on the album. The Fatal Believer and Repetition of Hatred are more likely to be assigned to Progressive Metal and contain a flowing transition from sometimes calm vocals to growling , which turns into manic screaming or screaming and creates a brutal, aggressive atmosphere.

The gentlest track on the Namamekashiki Ansoku album , Tamerai ni Hohoemi , whose unplugged version was accompanied by piano play , is haunting and desperate .

reception

The assessment was positive. The band would keep the high level of the previous album and with THE MARROW OF A BONE they would have delivered some of the best songs by Dir en gray of all time. But that has its price: less pop suitability , a lot more hard stuff, an audibly rougher production, but also outstanding titles. Furthermore, it doesn't matter what mood you are in, there is always a song on the album that goes with it.
