action

The single father John James moves to a remote farm in the country with his two children after a painful separation. His pubescent daughter Louisa cannot get used to boredom at all until she discovers a burial mound several meters high while playing at the edge of the forest. From then on, the daughter behaves more and more strangely.

When John starts talking to the supermarket cashiers while shopping and tells them where he lives, they speak of strange occurrences on the property in the past. On his return home, John finds his daughter's cat brutally killed on the edge of the forest. Louisa is sleepwalking recently and then comes out of the forest filthy. After John hears gruesome noises in the forest and is attacked in his car, he forbids his children, especially Louisa, to play outside.

Now John is finally doing research on the burial mound and the former homeowners. He then visits Roger Wayne, the previous owner of the house. He reports similar behavior in his granddaughter Emily, as John has recently noticed with Louisa. So Wayne once killed his granddaughter by starting a fire, and John should follow his example. His child can no longer be saved. The babysitter that John hired for the time of his absence disappears without a trace. Louisa shows early pregnancy symptoms like vomiting. John finds a nest made of dirt and twigs in Louisa's closet, as he saw in Emily's room. He is shocked - high time to act. He orders an excavator to destroy the burial mound. The previously consulted scientist Prof. Evan White, who is considered an expert on these rare and mysterious burial mounds, tries to prevent John from destroying the mound. Rather, he would like to investigate this hill archaeologically . He justifies this with a ritual handed down as a legend from prehistoric times, according to which an ancient branch of mankind that has been considered extinct for many thousands of years secures its continued existence through such hills. These are places of reproduction for which they win a young girl who is to give birth in the shelter of the hill. This reason allows John to recognize some of the strange behavior of his daughter and encourages him to remove the hill on the spot. The earthworks unearth the body of the babysitter, whereupon the digging is stopped for the time being. The autopsy reveals that she was eaten alive.

John wants to leave the house to get himself and his children to safety, but Louisa refuses to follow him. Lizard-like beings now force their way into the house. John shoots some of them. Next he hears Louisa's screams from the direction of the burial mound and rushes to his daughter's aid. He crawls into the building through an opening near the floor. The narrow entrance branches out into underground passages, some as tall as a man. In one of them he finds his daughter motionless, half buried in the earth, but alive, and brings her to the surface of the earth, pursued by the slimy beings. He dumps ready explosives into the entrance of the cave. When he has to realize that his daughter has already taken on external characteristics of the earth beings and he can no longer save her, he sets the hill on fire and sacrifices himself. His son remains in front of the house, who is approached by other beings.

criticism

“Director Luiso Berdejo takes on the subject of puberty and growing up and packs it into a mystery thriller. [...] The path to creep is slow but not boring. Above all, the many little things that give rise to goose bumps give rise to a big puzzle that, with a few weaknesses, finds a respectable solution towards the end. "

- MovieMaze

“In addition to the good and scary scenes in the film, the young Ivana Banquero (the little girl from Pan's labyrinth ) cuts a very good figure. Her changes are staged in a harmonious way and she has the part as a rebellious daughter under control. […] Conclusion: The New Daughter has turned out to be a solid horror film that tells a simple story that drifts a bit firmly towards the end and whose monsters may be distant relatives of those from I am Legend . They are sparsely used, however, and music and tones are used to create an eerie atmosphere. Not bad."

- OutNow.CH

“The New Daughter is somewhat reminiscent of episodes in the X-Files series, both in terms of content and structure . That's not a point of criticism, after all, these were often very atmospheric, scary and well done. But they usually ran according to a well-known pattern and each time had an end that fans could foresee in the third year at the latest. The horror film by Spanish director Luiso Berdejo also has this predictability. It is also not surprising that The New Daughter was only shown briefly in a small selection of theaters in the United States before it was released for the home video market. In the rest of the world it celebrated almost exclusively its premiere. And if the main character John James hadn't been played by Kevin Costner, he would probably have received even less attention.
