A female detective for Botswana (original title: English The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ) is a British - American crime series that takes place in the Botswana capital of Gaborone . The series was mainly filmed on the original locations and was the first major film production in Botswana. The plot is based on the first books in the series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency of the British writer Alexander McCall Smith .

characters

The main character in the series is Precious Ramotswe. She describes herself as a “traditionally built” Botswana woman and was taught by her father what a boy should know. When her father dies, he leaves her a herd of cattle. Precious sells the animals and uses this start-up capital to open a detective agency. She is the first female detective in Botswana, which is reflected in the company name No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency . Although the detective takes over cases very quickly, the business does not develop very profitably at the beginning. Her “heart in the right place” ensures that her first fees go to charity. Precious is selfless, humble, and happy with the simple things in life.

She is supported by her secretary Grace Makutsi. She finished the Botswana School of Secretaries as the best of the year with 97%, as she herself repeatedly emphasizes. So far, however, she has not found a job, as she does not want to convince through beauty like her competitors, but through skill. Despite her "tough" appearance, she quickly turns out to be a soul and waives her secretary salary at the end of the first month. Later in the series, she was promoted and given the title of Assistant Detective . She cares for her brother, who is suffering from AIDS .

The widower JLB Matekoni is a car mechanic and a friend of Ramotswe. At the end of the pilot he proposes to her, but Ramotswe rejects it. They only get engaged later in the series.

BK is the gay owner of Last Chance Hair Salon , which is right next to the detective's office. He also works in part on solving the cases.

Charisma

The first broadcast of the pilot took place on the BBC in March 2008 , the six other episodes followed in March and April 2009 .

In Germany, all seven episodes were broadcast by Arte in August 2011 .
