When the American embassy employee William Gridley began his service in London , he rented part of the house of the attractive Carly Hardwicke, following a newspaper advertisement. Gridley immediately falls in love with his landlady. Little does he know, as a newcomer, that many people in London believe that Carly killed her missing husband Miles.

After learning of the suspicion against Carly from a Scotland Yard officer , he and his superior, the American Ambassador Ambruster, want to prove Carly's innocence.

When the missing husband unexpectedly appears again, Carly shoots him in a scuffle. Thanks to the testimony of Mrs. Brown, an elderly neighbor from the house across the street, Carly escapes conviction for murder.

Mrs. Brown then tries to blackmail Carly. Further investigation by Gridley and Carly reveals that it was actually another neighbor, Mrs. Dunhill, who made the exonerating observation.

After another murder occurs, Mrs. Dunhill threatens to become the next victim. To save her, everyone rushes to the retirement home in Penzance where Mrs. Dunhill now lives. Mrs. Brown, who murdered the pawnbroker, can be overpowered there and arrested by Scotland Yard.
