The Seer is a German folk rock band. She comes from Augsburg and plays a mixture of anthem-like rock and folk elements.

history

The Seer was founded in 1990 by the brothers Jürgen ("Shook") and Peter Seipt (previously with Goethe's heirs ). Initially as a trio with drummer Stephan Daffner, who was soon replaced by Michael Nigg, the band developed an independent style based on bands such as U2 and Big Country . (The band name goes back to one of the latter's album titles.)

In 1992 Jürgen Nils Möller started as a bass player, the following year the multi-instrumentalist Jo Corda, who first came into contact with the band as a roadie . With mandolin and violin he brought folky trace elements into the sound of the band. With this mixture of hymn-like rock and folk sounds, The Seer earned the reputation of an excellent live band and thus got into the opening act of the stylistically related The Hooters . During these first years some demo cassettes were made that were sold at concerts.

In 1994 the band signed their first record deal with BMG Ariola . In the same year, the debut album Across the Border was recorded with producer Nick Griffiths in a former American military band in Augsburg , which was released in June 1995. This was followed by an extensive tour across Germany, including in the opening act for ex- Marillion singer Fish .

1996 was created with producer Peter Walsh, among others in the Real World Studios of Peter Gabriel album Own World , on its release in October again joined a long tour as the opening act for the The Seer among others Joe Cocker , The Who and the Scorpions acted . In 1997 Michael Nigg was a guest musician on the Simple Minds album Néapolis .

In June 1998 the album Liquid , which was again produced by Peter Walsh, was released , which on the one hand marked a departure from folk rock , but on the other hand produced the band's biggest single hit to date with Please . The band recorded parts of the album in their own "Black Lab" studio in Augsburg, where large parts of the following albums were also produced. In December, the live album Organic was recorded at three concerts in Augsburg , which was released in March 1999.

In the following years the band toured regularly, but it wasn't until June 2002 that the album Rise was released on the Point Music label. Produced by Ken Rose and sold a few months earlier under the title "01 | 02" in a limited edition at concerts, this album represented another gentle change in style, this time in the direction of radio-friendly Britpop . Meanwhile, according to their own statement, the band is no longer one hundred percent behind the album.

In 2003, the band put together a CD with unpublished recordings from the entire history of the band, which was published in a limited edition of 800 copies under the title Retrospective and was distributed over the Internet.

In May 2005 the album Arrival was released , produced by The Seer himself and Siggi Bemm, on which the band returned to their original style. At the same time the DVD The Seer was released from 1990-2005 , which documents 15 years of band history.

In April 2006, Retrospective Vol. 2 was published with further unpublished recordings, this time also in an edition of 800 copies.

In December 2006 the band recorded two sold-out shows in the Parktheater Augsburg to produce a new live album. The band worked again with Peter Walsh, the producer of Liquid and Own World , who mixed the album in his studio in Düsseldorf. The album Live and the DVD of the same name (with an extended tracklist ) were released in June 2007. At the same time, the five studio albums and the first live CD Organic were re-released on the FAME label .

On April 23, 2010, The Seer released their sixth studio album, Heading for the Sun , produced by Chris Wolff . Wide Eyed Walker , which appeared on September 21, 2012, was created in the same constellation . At the end of July 2013, The Seer appeared again three times as opening act for The Hooters as part of their 33 1/3 tour.

For the album Messages From The Black Lab , which was released on March 9, 2018, the band worked again with producer Peter Walsh. The title refers to the band's rehearsal room, which has always been known as the “Black Lab”.

Trivia

  • The record company advertised the album Own World with the slogan "If reality is boring - just build your own world". In contrast, the song of the same name says “stop living in your own world”.
  • Violinist Jo Corda - full-time teacher - used the breaks between soundcheck and concert during the tour-intensive period in 1995/96 to correct his students' homework.
  • Jürgen "Shook" Seipt is also a teacher (at a Bavarian secondary school).
  • Michael Nigg operates on the Simple Minds album Néapolis as "Michael Niggs".
  • The string parts for Please were recorded in Prague . But without the drummer Michael Nigg, who instead spent a day on the German-Czech border - his identity card had expired.
  • The album Rise was only two days late in record stores due to the label's distribution problems.
  • The Seer share the album title Arrival with ABBA and Journey .
  • The song The World Cries Love was re-produced for release as a radio single by Peter Walsh, partly using individual tracks from the original version contained on the album Across the Border , partly with new recordings. In addition to the shorter “radio version”, the single also contains a somewhat misleading “album version” which is actually a longer version of the newly produced song and not the recording published on Across the Border .
