action

The action takes place in Borneo in the 1930s. John Truscott got a job in the administration of the British colony shortly after graduating. Reviews

Christopher Null praised the camera work on www.filmcritic.com.

Cinema magazine wrote that the film told a “ gentle story in beautiful pictures, but without much depth ”.

Awards

Jessica Alba, Bob Hoskins, Brenda Blethyn and the cameraman Martin Fuhrer received the DVD Exclusive Award in 2003 . Six other nominations for the same award included those for the direction and script by Guy Jenkin, for Emily Mortimer, for the film music and for the editing.

backgrounds

The film was shot in the Malaysian state of Sarawak and in London . Its production amounted to an estimated 12 million US dollars . In the US, Germany and a few other countries, the film was released directly on video or DVD.

The historical framework of the film is fictional. Unlike what is portrayed in the film, the real Sarawak was not a colony of the UK in the 1930s , but was the personal property of the Brooke family known as the White Rajas . Only after the end of World War II did Sarawak become a British crown colony for almost two decades in 1946, before becoming part of what is now Malaysia in 1963.
