The Spirit is a Saarland melodic death and black metal band from Saarbrücken that was founded in 2015.

history

The band was formed in 2015. The line-up consists of the guitarist AK, the guitarist and singer MT, the bassist AT and the drummer Manuel "MS" Steitz. In 2017 the band's own label Eternal Echoes released the debut album Sounds from the Vortex in an edition of 500 copies . After the group signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast in April 2018 , the debut album was re-released in the summer of that year. In autumn of that year they went on a European tour with Hypocrisy and Kataklysm . In the same year the band was also at Party.San and Summer Breeze . In 2019 the group was represented at the Rock Hard Festival , among others .

style

laut.de compared the group with bands like Dissection , Immortal , Dimmu Borgir , At the Gates and Edge of Sanity . Rock Hard's Mandy Malonwrote that shewould assignthe band not only to Death but also to Black Metal, as the riffs , melodies and the strong vocals would also suggest. In an interview with her, MT agreed to this genre assignment. The members are fans of music from the 1990s as well as current music. Many of the lyrics on the album Sounds from the Vortex have more than just one meaning, although they are mostly less of a fantastic nature, but rather have a real foundation. In the same issue, Patrick Schmidt reviewed the album and heard influences from Dissection and Unanimated . There are “icy guitar storms carried by a much darker melody”. He assigned the group to black and death metal and drew a comparison with Thulcandra . Andreas Schiffmann had already reviewed the album a year earlier. The group play a mix of black and death metal in the Swedish style that takes you back to 1995. He drew a comparison to Unanimated and Dawn . In the music, "clanking melodies" and "a manic-aggressive undertone" prevail, although it is not very original, but is played with solid craftsmanship. Martin Wickler from Metal Hammer described the album as a melodic mixture of death and black metal and was reminded of the early dissection. However, the group knows how to not just imitate, but rather "give the songs their own groove ". However, the band uses the same trademarks, such as "[z] white guitar runs, [a] powerful drumming, powerful guttural vocals , surprisingly interspersed arpeggios , cleverly used breaks and the obligatory acoustic guitar ". Occasionally the band also take the speed out of their songs, although these are well arranged . In the same issue, Katrin Riedl described the album as a mixture of “deep blackness and apocalyptic riffs”. The band had succeeded in wrapping the mood of Dissection's songs in a modern sound garment, which resulted in accessible and atmospheric pieces. In an interview with her, MT stated that the group does not try to create atmosphere through the use of keyboards, but rather does it with the electric guitars. Guitar harmonies have a particularly high value, which The Spirit associates with bands from the 1990s.
