action

Adolescent Jack is quite the loser in real life. He is bullied by a gang of thugs at school and in the neighborhood. But in his computer game world, as the "Black Knight", he is the great hero in a World of Warcraft- like role-playing game . His poor mother has money problems, so Jack helps out in an antique shop. The owner of Chinese origin is good friends with him and gives him a man-sized jug that he takes home.

At night an imperial bodyguard appears who introduces himself as Zhoo and, against his will, leaves the teenage Princess Su Lin, who is persecuted in her world, to him. Jack is supposed to protect her from the evil Arun, who wants to marry her and enslave the whole kingdom. Somehow, despite bizarre encounters, Jack manages to protect the princess for a short time. The two get closer, but the rites of their homeland forbid Jack to touch them.

After more and more attackers get out of the jug, Jack finally fails and the princess is kidnapped. With the help of a mysterious magician he now arrives in the fantasy world, which is somewhat reminiscent of his virtual role-playing world. There he is supposed to support Zhoo in saving the empress. But Jack is still Jack and not the "Black Knight" the kingdom has been waiting for.

Zhoo and Jack set out as a joint venture. In doing so, they save each other's lives several times. Finally, Zhoo takes Jack and introduces him to the secrets of martial arts . In return, Jack teaches him to swim. Not at all clumsily, the two now oppose an overwhelming number of enemies in order to prevent the upcoming wedding. Eventually they are captured anyway.

With the help of the magician, they manage to escape and prevent the wedding. Jack is able to save the princess and in a forest clearing there is a showdown between him and Arun, which Jack can win with the last of his strength.

Subsequently, Su Lin is crowned empress. Since Jack is caught kissing her, he has to flee the world and ends up back in his own reality. There he succeeds in defeating his previous tormentors. With his programming skills, he can also free his mother from her financial tightness: he programs a fantasy role-playing game based on the motifs of his adventurous story. A little later, Su Lin also comes to visit, who has relaxed the rules a bit and is now on vacation in Jack's world.

In the final scene, Su Lin lays his head on Jack's shoulder while they hold hands and each eat an ice cream.

background

The Warriors Gate is a Sino-French co-production and was produced by EuropaCorp (Luc Besson) and Fundamental Films (China). It marks the beginning of a three-film collaboration between the two production companies and had a budget of 300 million renminbi (CN ¥), or around 38 million euros.

The film was shot in China and Canada.

Reviews

The Warriors Gate is aimed primarily at a younger audience. Elizabeth Kerr wrote a rather ambivalent review for the Hollywood Reporter , which pointed out the many errors and clichés. Kerr highlighted the portrayal of wrestler and martial arts star Dave Bautista , who looks like he's starring in another, better movie. Technically, the film is average. You miss the originality of Hoenes Cockneys vs. Zombies , who unfortunately would play it safe with this film.

James Marsh compared the film in his review for the South China Morning Post to Starfight , from whom he borrowed the story. He found the film out of date, it would look more like a relic from another era. Above all, he was bothered by the fact that it was once again a "white hero" who played the main role in the story. That being said, he found the film energetic and entertaining.
