The White Buffalo is the stage name of the American country folk musician Jacob Aaron Smith (* 1974 in Eugene , Oregon ).

biography

Jake Smith grew up in Huntington Beach , Southern California, and didn't get into music until he was an adult in college. He chose his stage name The White Buffalo after a random suggestion. In 2002 he completed his first album entitled Hogtied Like a Rodeo . For the second release he was able to win Koool G Murder from the Eels as producer. The The White Buffalo EP with six songs was released in 2005. In the following years grew its fame, among other things, having appeared with the band Gomez , Ziggy Marley and Donavon Frankenreiter . His professional surfer colleague Chris Malloy helped his song Wrong to become more popular by being used in a surfer film. The White Buffalo also made a name for itself in Japan and Australia .

The breakthrough came in 2010 with the EP Prepare for Black & Blue and the use of a number of his songs in the television series Sons of Anarchy and Californication and in several films. A version of the classic House of the Rising Sun by him with the series band Forest Rangers can be found on the songs of anarchy soundtrack . Smith signed a record deal with the Unison label . The EP The Lost and Found 2011 and the following year the first real label album Once Upon a Time in the West were at least notable successes and entered the US Heatseekers charts. While the songs on this album deal musically and thematically with the US past, Jake Smith dedicated his next album to the fate of the Iraq war veterans. Shadows, Grays & Evil Ways was released in 2013 and earned him a place in the official album sales charts .

At the end of the series Sons of Anarchy , The White Buffalo sang the song Come Join the Murder again together with the Forest Rangers as swan song . The text for this comes from series initiator and producer Kurt Sutter . After the last episode was broadcast on December 9, 2014, the 7½ minute long piece was in great demand and sold over 40,000 times as downloads. With that, the song also made it to number 93 in the single charts and in the top ten of the rock charts .

The White Buffalo recorded the specially composed song "I know you" for the game Halo Wars 2 by 343 Industries, which will be released in 2017, and the accompanying trailer .

In Germany, he became known to the general public through his appearance on the ARD Late Night program Inas Nacht on June 2, 2018, for which, according to the hostess, he flew in from California.
