The Wine Advocate (abbreviated TWA or WA ) is a magazine that was initiated by the wine critic Robert Parker in 1978 and is still published. The ad-free journal, initially entitled "The Baltimore-Washington Wine Advocate", is only available by subscription from the start. Parker guarantees its independence through the freedom from advertising. Around 7500 different wines are tasted each year. The sold circulation in 1998 was 45,000 copies. TWA is one of several Robert Parker wine publications such as the Wine Buyer's Guide.

Robert Parker and his team taste wine according to the system of Parker points (50–100 points) he developed, whereby the top mark was almost never given and wines below the 60 point mark are already considered inedible. According to his own statements, the wines that his winery has produced himself since 1992 are never the subject of his tests. Parker's wine ratings have a huge impact on the wine market and have a huge impact on the prices of the wines being advertised. His British colleague Hugh Johnson , who is eight years his senior, criticizes the point system he has created.

In the meantime, an 85-point limit has developed, below which the wine no longer receives any special attention. Most international wine tastings take place according to the 100-point system, with wines below 80 (online editions) or 85 (print magazines) points mostly not being mentioned.

The self-taught wine maker, who lives in Monkton , Maryland , studied law in France in the 1970s , where his passion for wine arose. Influenced by consumer advocate Ralph Nader , he too soon criticized the dependence of wine consumers on the wine trade and advertising. He wanted an independent body that would evaluate wine as objectively as possible . Initially he only rated wines from Bordeaux , whose future development he was able to estimate based on barrel samples ( young wine ). In response, the prices of the wines tasted skyrocketed.

The magazine, which initially appeared as a free supplement , developed after a few issues as a specialist journal for discerning wine consumers. With a staff of employees (Neal Martin, Mark Squires, Antonio Galloni, Dr. Jay Miller and David Schildknecht), he now evaluates wines from Bordeaux, the Rhône , Provence , Alsace , Beaujolais , Burgundy , Champagne , Languedoc-Roussillon , and the Loire as well as from New Zealand , Australia and South America , Portugal and Israel , Italy , Spain and ports , Austria and Germany , Oregon , Washington and California.
