The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Thelocactus conothelos subsp. conothelos ( rule & small) Backeb. & FMKnuth :
The flowers are usually magenta, sometimes white.
  • Thelocactus conothelos subsp. argenteus ( Glass & Foster) Glass :
The first description was by Charles Edward Glass and Michael Foster as Thelocactus conothele var. argenteus . In 1997, Charles Edward Glass recombined it as a subspecies to Thelocactus conothelos . Plants with very light thorns and pink flowers from Nuevo León.
  • Thelocactus conothelos subsp. aurantiacus Glass & Foster :

The subspecies Thelocactus conothelos subsp. Accepted by Alessandro Mosco and Carlo Zanovello in 2000 . garciae (Glass & M. Mendoza) Mosco & Zanov. , which differs in area of distribution, thorns and flower color, is considered a synonym for Thelocactus conothelos .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN , the subspecies was in 2002 Thelocactus conothelos subsp. argenteus as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. classified critically endangered. Thelocactus conothelos subsp. aurantiacus was considered " Endangered (EN) " in 2002 , i. H. endangered. In the 2009 update, the subspecies was not re-evaluated and removed from the red list.
