Theo Lutz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theo Lutz (born July 23, 1932 ; † January 31, 2010 in Esslingen am Neckar ) was a German computer scientist . Lutz was a professor at the Faculty of Information Technology of the University of Esslingen and a pioneer in the field of digital poetry .

The stochastic texts that Theo Lutz created in 1959 by programming an algorithm for a Z22 constructed by Konrad Zuse are the first computer-generated poetry.

He studied mathematics, physics and electronics in Stuttgart and Tübingen and from 1959 was employed by Standard Elektrik Lorenz AG, Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. From 1966 he worked for IBM Germany, where in 1982 he became head of the department of fundamental questions and product forecasts in Stuttgart , where he dealt with technology assessment , among other things . Lutz was a student of the philosopher Max Bense and was in contact with the Stuttgart group / school .

In 1987 he put forward ten theses on the development of the computer up to 2010, many of which have now come true.

Theo Lutz died in 2010 after many years of dementia.

Ten times in 2010

Thesis 1:

“By 2010 the computer will be a widely used tool. Humans have got used to the fact that the computer is useful, but also that the computer is superior to them in many areas and that one can no longer do without it. - It is typical for today that we have no feeling for which areas this will be. "

Thesis 2:

"The years up to 2010 will be determined primarily in our offices by the liberation of people from a considerable part of 'informal communication', which can be formally handled more quickly and productively using suitable media."

Thesis 5:

This thesis predicted a “slang-spoken” communication in writing and voice between humans and computers.

Thesis 9:

“In 2010, too, the enlightened and democratic society will have its specific fears, but they will have little to do with the computer. Topics such as 'fear of surveillance', 'job killer', 'data protection' and others are no longer seen in connection with the computer. Data protection is accepted and respected as a civil right. "

Thesis 10:

“By 2010, we will have developed a certain understanding of whether the computer is more than just a branch of the brain or an intelligence amplifier. Everything points to the fact that terms such as 'Artificial Intelligence' have been put into perspective by 2010 and reduced to their purely technical, tool-like meaning. A symbiosis between the biological brain and the technical computer remains a fiction. "
