Theobald Baerwart (officially Ludwig Theobald Bärwart; born May 14, 1872 in Basel , † October 5, 1942 in Liestal ) was a Swiss dialect poet .
Live and act
Theobald Baerwart grew up as the son of a master baker in Kleinbasel and graduated from the upper secondary school in 1891 . He began to study philology at the University of Zurich in the summer semester of 1892 , but left the university after the semester was over. In the same year he was the librarian of the newly formed International Club of Socialist Students. In the summer of 1894 he was a law student at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . But he finally dropped out. In 1895 he joined the Federal Customs Administration as a “provisional assistant” . He had to work in Les Verrières for several years due to a penalty transfer . He then worked in Basel again until his retirement in 1935, most recently as head of the “duty-free movement of goods” department.
Baerwart was active as a singer in the Basler Liedertafel, where he became an honorary member and Swiss veteran singer. He wrote Schnitzelbänke for the Basel Carnival , but also a song about Vogel Gryff . He was a superior and a clerk in the Bread Basin Guild . Finally he started to publish. In 1918 he published his first work, the Rosswiler Stories , in standard language. With the short story Uus em Glaibasel he switched to Basel German in 1921 . The subject of his poems and stories was the Basel petty bourgeoisie , which he described with love and irony. He also published plays. His texts developed language-educational effects in Basel. Baerwart was co-founder and secretary of the Basel section of the PEN club . He also worked for the Basel Lever Foundation .
Theobald Baerwart married Elsa Layh (1882–1967) from Karlsruhe in 1907. They had two daughters. From 1908 he lived in the Villa Tannhäuser in Bottmingen, which he had built . His urn is in the Hörnli cemetery . A secondary school in Kleinbasel (formerly the “am Rhein” school building) has been named after him since 1968 .
The social democrat Wilhelm Bärwart was his cousin.
