Life

Goerg Hagn was born on March 23, 1816 at 3 a.m. as the son of the unmarried Griesbach bath and surgeon daughter Josepha Popp in Untergriesbach No. 80 (today Marktstrasse 23) in Bavaria. His father was the single tradesman Mathias Hag (e) n from Obernzell near Passau. The first two years of life spent Georg with his mother in her parents' home until the parents in 1818 in Upper Austria Hofmark box on the Danube a small agricultural estate with pottery meet same purchase. The parents marry on April 21, 1818 in the parish church of Vichtenstein, thereby legitimizing their first-born, who will be followed by 13 other siblings. He attended elementary school in Griesbach, Obernzell and Vichtenstein. From autumn 1828 he moved to Linz, where he devoted himself to humanistic studies. With excellent grades, he finished high school in 1834 and studied philosophy at the Linz Lyceum for two years with brilliant exams. On September 21, 1836, he was dressed in the Benedictine Abbey of Kremsmünster , studied theology in Linz from 1837 to 1840, and on September 29, 1840, he was perpetually professed by the monastery name Theodorich. On July 24, 1841, he was ordained a priest in Linz and celebrated his primacy on August 10 in Obernzell near Passau. From 1841 he worked in Kremsmünster as archivist , from 1846 as custodian of the collegiate church and from 1850 until his appointment as Abbot of Lambach as novice master .

From 1857 to 1859 he accompanied Cardinal Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg as secretary during the apostolic visitation of the Austrian Benedictine monasteries. Against the wishes of the Lambach monks, Cardinal Schwarzenberg appointed his secretary abbot of the Lambach Benedictine monastery on September 8, 1858 . On December 13, 1858, the Apostolic See confirmed the appointment, whereupon the entire Lambacher Convention was secularized in protest. Ordained abbot in Lambach on March 17, 1859, Abbot Theoderich intends to revive monastic life with monks from other monasteries and religious orders (St. Boniface in Munich, Metten, Kremsmünster, Pannonhalma in Hungary, Stams, St. Florian) and to revive monastic life in Lambach To build reform monastery. From 1859 he had the most important monastery rooms restored (refectory, Loreto and sacrament chapel, winter choir, chapter house, ambulatory, cloister), laid out a convent cemetery in the cloister and expanded the library holdings. To improve pastoral care, he revitalized old associations and founds new ones (1863 the Brotherhood of Eternal Adoration, 1877 the Arch-Brotherhood and the Rosary and Loreto Brotherhood). In 1861 he bought the Niederhof in Mayrlambach , founded a savings bank in Lambach as well as an artists 'school and a boys' choir institute in the monastery. In addition, in 1864 he brought Borromean women from Prague to Stadl-Paura and supported the establishment of the Nazareth monastery.

Although Abbot Theodoric does not appear to the outside world due to the stricter monastery discipline, he is still twice elected to the Lambach community committee. Marked by the difficulties, he dies bitter and grieved on August 29, 1872 at 11.30 p.m. in Lambach Abbey of an inflammation of the pericardium. He finds his final resting place in the convent cemetery. His successor will be the former Cistercian and theology professor Johannes Lasser von Zollheim, who will continue his reform work.
