The Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium (abbreviation: THG) is the oldest high school in the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein with a focus on ancient languages and music.

history

Since the founding of the city of Ludwigshafen, its residents have been dependent on the higher education system in the neighboring city of Mannheim. In order to remedy this situation, a government decree of September 26, 1873 set up a state four-class Latin school and in 1894 with the addition to the 6th class it was converted into a Progymnasium , which made it possible to take the one-year volunteer examination . In 1898 the school was elevated to a full high school. The first thirteen high school graduates passed their final exams in 1901. A total of 234 students attended the school this year. The headmasters until then were: Franz Xaver Dörschl (October 1, 1873 - November 10, 1874), Franz Binder (November 14, 1874 - September 20, 1878), Franz Böhm (September 20, 1878 - August 30, 1893), Joseph Füger (October 1, 1892 - September 1, 1898), Dr. Friedrich Schmidt (September 1, 1898 - September 1, 1902) and Dr. Philipp Stumpf (from February 1, 1902).

From 1919 on, girls were also admitted to the humanistic grammar school by a ministerial resolution. In 1920, a high school was set up with the second foreign language English instead of ancient Greek.

In 1948 the grammar school was divided into a humanistic and a secondary school branch. Therefore, in 1950 the school was officially known as the “ State Old and New Language High School ”.

In 1964 the grammar school was given its current name in memory of the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss .

school subjects

In the lower level, the subjects fine arts, German, English, geography, Latin, mathematics, music, NaWi, sport and religion / ethics are taught, with Latin lessons beginning in the 5th and English lessons in the 6th grade.

From middle school onwards, social studies and history are added, while NaWi is replaced by biology, chemistry and physics. The students also take another foreign language, depending on their choice of ancient Greek or French.

In the upper level there is the possibility to choose philosophy, performing games and computer science.

school-building

In 1873 the Latin school moved into the previous primary school building on Bismarckplatz next to St. Ludwig's Church . In 1875 it was given its own building on Schulstrasse next to the Maxschule. In the summer of 1938 it returned to its previous location in Bismarckstrasse, where an eclectic new building in the style of the time was built between 1904 and 1906 for the then Höhere Töchterschule (today: Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium). In 1970 the modern new building built according to plans by Professor Müller (preliminary design: 1965) on Freyastraße in the West district was moved into. The old grammar school building on Bismarckstrasse now houses a vocational school.
