Theodor Breitwieser , also Breidwiser or Breidwieser (born July 16, 1847 in Vienna , † 1930 in Kaltenleuthaben ) was an Austrian genre and military painter .

life and work

Breitwieser enjoyed his training at the Vienna Academy from 1866 under his teacher Eduard von Engerth . He mainly painted military scenes, but also genre pictures from popular life. Inspired by Nikolaus Lenau's poem " The Three ", he painted the picture Austrian Uhlans on the march , which Archduke Ludwig bought. Emperor Franz Joseph I also acquired a large number of Breitwieser's paintings, which made the artist popular among Viennese court circles.

In 1885 Breitwieser traveled to the United States , where he painted some large panorama pictures of battles. During this time, some genre and horse representations as well as scenes from the life of the cowboys were created , including a " parade in the prairie ", which in turn was acquired by Emperor Franz Joseph.

Theodor Breitwieser was a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus from 1883, and in 1915 he was awarded the silver medal of the Albrecht Dürer Association.

Many paintings are now in Austrian museums, but even more are privately owned, which means that the paintings are repeatedly offered at art auctions .
