Theodor Eisenlohr (born April 30, 1805 in Herrenberg ; † August 31, 1869 in Zurich ) was a German educator and politician.

family

Theodor Eisenlohr, PhD Dr. phil., rector and high school supervisor in Nürtingen, was born in Herrenberg as the son of dean Christoph Eisenlohr from Reutlingen and his wife Friederike, geb. Lebret, born. During his time as an assistant chaplain, he met an uncle Gustav Feuerlein from Wolfschlugen, whose daughter Auguste Rosine Henriette Feuerlein met in the rectory . A short time later he stayed with the parents of Auguste, Gustav Feuerlein and his wife Christiane, nee. Duvernoy to take the daughter's hand.

On October 17, 1833, Theodor Eisenlohr married Auguste Feuerlein in Wolfschlugen (* March 24, 1813 in Wolfschlugen ; † February 24, 1857 in Nürtingen ). The marriage had ten children: Theodor, Emilie, Ferdinand, Eugenie, Ottilie and Ludwig . Four other children died in infancy.

life and work

Theodor Eisenlohr attended the Tübingen monastery , after his training he became an assistant chaplain and local school inspector in Marbach am Neckar . In this occupation he encountered famine, moral decline and house and child begging among the common people. These experiences had a decisive influence on Eisenlohr's social attitude.

In 1842 he became rector of the newly established teachers' college in Nürtingen, which was expanded in 1844 with a model school for girls, in 1845 with a private preparation institute and in 1846 with an institute for the deaf and dumb. In 1865 he was appointed high school councilor.

In order to create orderly aid for the poor, he founded the Nürtingen district charity in 1847 in view of the rise in food prices after years of poor harvests . In 1848 he set up the Nürtingen auxiliary loan office and Sparkasse for the Nürtingen district . He also took over the chairmanship of the administrative board of the non-profit organization. This Oberamtssparkasse later became the Kreissparkasse Nürtingen . Eisenlohr can therefore be considered the founder of this institute.

Eisenlohr died of a stroke in 1869 on a trip to see his daughter in Zurich. He was buried in Nürtingen.

politics

In November 1847 he was sent as a member of the Württemberg state parliament and held this mandate until 1849. In 1849 he also became a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly . He moved up as a substitute when Gustav von Rümelin resigned from his mandate. As a member of the rump parliament he went to Stuttgart and witnessed its violent dissolution together with Ludwig Uhland . As a left-wing liberal MP, Eisenlohr was later viewed with suspicion by the government and his "state-disruptive activity" was punished with cuts in salaries.

Honors

In 1867 Theodor Eisenlohr was honored with the Knight's Cross of the Friedrich Order . In 1868 the city of Nürtingen was the first person ever to grant him honorary citizenship. In Nürtingen, a school (special school) and a street were named after Theodor Eisenlohr.
