Theodor Immanuel Heinrich Georgii (born January 9, 1826 in Esslingen am Neckar , † September 25, 1892 in Wilhelmsdorf near Ravensburg) was one of the most important protagonists of the German gymnastics movement . He was the first chairman of the German Gymnastics Association .

Theodor Georgii was born in Kaisheimer Pflegehof and attended the Esslingen pedagogy before his father sent him to the reform school of Friedrich Wilhelm Klumpp in Stetten Castle in the Remstal . Movement and gymnastics were particularly intensively promoted there. The enthusiasm and ideals that the young Theodor experienced while doing gymnastics shaped him for the rest of his life. During this time he became a supporter of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn .

From 1843 on, Theodor Georgii studied law in Tübingen , where he founded his own gymnastics community. During his studies in 1843 he became a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity and the Walhalla Tübingen fraternity. In 1846 he welcomed gymnasts from all over Germany for the first time at a gymnastics festival in Heilbronn . In 1847 he was a founding member of the Tübingen Pompier Corps, which was organized as a Turner fire brigade . Also in 1847 he passed the state examination.

In 1848 Theodor Georgii was elected first chairman of the newly founded Deutscher Turner-Bund . In the same year he was one of the leading figures in the creation of the Swabian Gymnastics Association. He spent his legal traineeship at the local courts in Waiblingen , Besigheim and Leonberg . After he had passed the second service examination, he began practicing as a lawyer in Stuttgart in 1849 . In 1850 he became the editor of the Turnblatt for and from Swabia , which was renamed the Eßlinger Turnzeitung in 1854 . In 1851, at the request of his father, he moved from Stuttgart to his hometown Esslingen am Neckar, where he also worked as a lawyer.

On August 30, 1852, Theodor Georgii, who was co-founder of the Tübingen fire brigade during his student days in 1847, invited to a meeting for the purpose of founding a voluntary Steigerkompanie in the "Schwanen". About 80 men followed this invitation, all of them from the gymnastics class. After the decision to set up such a riser company , he was elected first captain by the assembly. August 30, 1852 is the founding day of the Esslingen Volunteer Fire Brigade.

In 1860 Georgii was in Coburg as chairman of the German Gymnastics and Youth Festival with more than 1000 participants. It was there that the founding of the German Gymnastics Association (DT) was decided, which took place in 1868. Geogii became its first chairman that year.

Georgii was the father of eleven children, including Max Georgii . Most recently he lived with his son in Wilhelmsdorf until his death in 1892.

In 1895 the German gymnastics movement donated a memorial on the Maille in Esslingen. The monument was erected on July 21, 1895 as part of the XI. German Turntages (July 21st to 24th) inaugurated. The Georgii-Gymnasium in Esslingen has been named after Theodor Georgii since 1937.
