Theodor Kleehaas (born November 9 or 10, 1854 in Germersheim , † 1928 or January 21, 1929 in Munich ) was a German portrait and genre painter .

Life

Theodor Kleehaa's son, the merchant, was trained in drawing at the Cooper's Institute in New York before he moved to the Munich Art Academy in 1879 . His teachers there included Alexander Strähuber , Gyula Benczúr and Alexander von Wagner . From 1889 he exhibited regularly in the Munich Glass Palace ; In 1893/94 he took part in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition , in 1897 he received a silver medal for a work that was shown in the London Crystal Palace .

His studio was at Schwindstrasse 13 in Munich, where he also lived. He was married to Maria Anna, geb. Last.

Kleehaas toured Italy, France and Belgium. He remained true to the style of Munich genre painting around 1880 and took up only a few suggestions from Impressionism . English and American collectors bought works from Kleehaas' hand; in the album Young Blood , which was published by Bruckmann in Munich, twelve of his paintings are shown in collotype .

Theodor Kleehaas was buried in the old northern cemetery in Munich. His grave is in burial field 9, row 3.

On January 6, 2019, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann and filmed in Schloss Reinbek . In it, an oil painting by Theodor Kleehaas was discussed with painting expert Beate Rhenisch, which may show a fairground scene.
