Johann Theodor Martin (born June 18, 1839 in Konstanz , † September 10, 1906 in Heiligenberg ) was a German priest of the Roman Catholic Church with the title of Monsignor , princely Fürstenberg court chaplain and historian.

Live and act

Theodor Martin was the son of a master tailor. His eloquence was already noticed at the Konstanz high school , which later made him a sought-after preacher. As a talented singer, Martin was a member of the “Singer Group Bodan” (today the Symphonic Choir) in Constance. From 1859 he studied theology at the University of Freiburg i. Br .; In 1863 he was ordained a priest in St. Peter by Archbishop Hermann von Vicari .

His vicariate at the parish church in Donaueschingen , where he was able to establish relationships with the royal court of the Princely Prince, was decisive for Martin's further career . In 1867 he was entrusted with the royal chaplaincy in Heiligenberg. His investiture as court chaplain took place in 1880 due to the Baden Kulturkampf. In 1874 he refused the offer to change to an old Catholic parish. The archbishop's ordinariate considered Martin a suitable candidate for a larger parish, but he was not willing to give up his position of trust at the princely court. In addition to pastoral care, Martin gave religious instruction in Heiligenberg. He worried about the occupation of the Fürstenberg patronage parishes and in the meantime, as parish administrator, about pastoral care in the neighboring parishes of Röhrenbach and Betenbrunn . Martin is buried in a chapel he built himself in the Heiligenberg cemetery; in his will he considered the poor of his community.

The duties of pastor and court chaplain gave Theodor Martin freedom for travel and historical research. He described a trip to Italy ("Im Fluge", 1881), but most of his publications deal with the history and art history of Heiligenberg and other places in the Lake Constance region of Baden. Martin belonged to the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , for whose writings he wrote several essays; from 1892 to 1899 he represented the Grand Duchy of Baden on the board .
