Theodor Schober (basketball coach)

Theodor "Torry" Schober (born June 13, 1928 ) is a former German basketball coach and player. In 1971 and 1972 he was the national coach of the German national team .

career

Schober, who comes from Mährisch Ostrau , played for the Turnerbund Heidelberg, with which he became German champions several times in the late 1940s and 1950s. He also took part with the German national team in the European Championships in 1951, 1953 and 1955.

On April 15, 1951, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf for his athletic achievements.

After his playing career, Schober was a coach at USC Heidelberg before moving to Mainz in 1965 . There he took up a teaching position at the Institute for Physical Education at the University of Mainz and became a trainer at USC Mainz . In 1971 he became national coach and was in office until 1972, so he looked after the German national team at the Summer Olympics in Munich , among others .

In the further course of his career Schober coached the BSC Saturn Cologne , with which he became German champion and cup winner, as well as competed in the European Cup. At the beginning of the 1980s, Schober was again coach of the German men's national team in a team with Terence Schofield .

Schober was also active as a basketball referee and from 1962 also led games for the world association FIBA , including at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City . In 1979 he was appointed "FIBA Honorary Arbitrator for Life". Later he was also a technical inspector on behalf of FIBA.
