Theodor Schwartz

Johann Carl Theodor Schwartz (born April 14, 1841 in Lübeck ; † April 10, 1922 there ) was a German trade unionist and social democratic politician.

Life

Schwartz was a trained shaper , but also worked as a cabin boy, sailor and ship's cook. From 1886 to 1895 he was a caterer in Lübeck.

In 1868 he joined the General German Workers 'Association and through the union of the workers' parties in 1875 became a member of the SDAP , which in 1890 was called the SPD .

Between 1889 and 1891 Schwartz was the shop steward for the Former Germany. Then Schwartz was part-time chairman of the Former Association until 1901. He was also part-time editor of the association newspaper "Glück auf" between 1891 and 1895. In 1890 Schwartz was one of the co-founders of the General Commission of the German Trade Unions . Until 1892 he was a member. He was also a co-founder and member of the union press commission in 1894. From 1895 to 1919 Schwartz was managing director of the Lübecker Volksbote . He then retired.

Schwartz had run regularly for the Reichstag since 1876 and initially unsuccessfully . He had only been a member of the Reichstag since 1890, to which he belonged, with the exception of the years between 1893 and 1898 to 1918. He was one of the critics of the war credit policy in the Reichstag parliamentary group and joined the Social Democratic Working Group in 1916 , but did not convert to the USPD .

In addition, Schwartz belonged to the state parliament of the Lübeck citizenship from 1905 to 1921. In 1919 he served as the senior president .

Among other things, a workers' welfare home is named after Schwartz .
