Theodorus Hendrik Mac Gillavry (born June 3, 1835 in Jakarta (Indonesia), † May 14, 1921 in The Hague ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

Theodorus Hendrik was the son of the colonial official in Indonesia Hendrik Mac Gillavry (born December 3, 1797 in Zwolle; † February 15, 1835 in Surakarta (Indonesia)) and his wife Anna Theodora Maurisse (born August 30, 1799 in Leiden; † 24. August 1849 in Surakarta (Indonesia)). After some time in Indonesia, he completed his school instruction in Zwolle . In 1853 he became a pupil of the Reichszöglingsschule for medical doctors of the military in Utrecht and enrolled on June 7, 1856 as a student at the University of Utrecht . Here he became the assistant of Franciscus Cornelis Donders , received his doctorate on June 25, 1858 with the subject of De oculi accomodationis qualitateand obtained a doctorate in medicine on November 4th of the same year. He then worked as a military doctor in the Dutch East Indies , returned to the Netherlands in 1863 due to dysentery and was dismissed from colonial service for health reasons in January 1865.

In October 1865 he became a mathematics teacher at the industrial and commercial school in Enschede and from August 1869 at the Reich Higher Citizens School (HBS) in Tilburg . On April 1, 1872, he became a teacher of physiology and histology and director of the Reich Veterinary School in Utrecht. Here he received the title of professor in 1875 and held the office until 1877. Because he was appointed professor of pathology, pathological surgery and medical policy at the University of Leiden on September 19, 1877 , which office he took on November 21, 1877 with the speech De wetenschappelijke beoefening the Ziektekunde took over. In Leiden in 1885 he became the founder of the anatomical, pathological and bacteriological Boorhave Laboratory and in 1897/98, as rector of the Alma Mater, he also took part in the university's organizational tasks. For the latter task, he gave the Rector's speech de Continuiteit van het doode en het levende on February 8, 1898 .

For reasons of age, he retired on March 15, 1905 and retired on June 3 of that year. He then spent his old age in The Hague, where he finally died. Mac Gillavry worked in several institutions and societies of his time. On May 4, 1875, he was a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , a member of the Society for the Promotion of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht, in 1881 a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem and in 1885 a consultative member of the Batavian Society of Experimental Philosophy in Rotterdam . In addition, he was appointed Knight of the North Star Order of Sweden in 1898 and Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions in 1906 .

Mac Gillavry married on January 2, 1866 in Utrecht Jannigje Carolina van Geelen (born September 4, 1844 in Semarang (Indonesia), † January 9, 1932 in The Hague), the daughter of the teacher Pieter van Geelen (born November 24, 1813 in Woerden; † January 15, 1878 in Utrecht) and his wife Jacoba Carolina Beer (born December 21, 1814 in Semarang (Indonesia); † November 2, 1899 in Utrecht).
