Thiago Neves Augusto (born February 27, 1985 in Curitiba , Brazil ) is a Brazilian soccer player .

Career

The offensive midfielder began his career as a professional footballer at Paraná Clube in Curitiba . He spent the 2006 season on loan in Japan with Vegalta Sendai before he was signed by Fluminense in 2007, initially on loan, and had his breakthrough there. In June of that year he won his first title after beating Figueirense FC 1-0 in the final second leg of the Brazilian Cup in Florianópolis . The first leg in the local Maracanã Stadium ended 1: 1. At the end of the year he was awarded the Bola de Ouro as the best player of the championship season, in which Fluminense finished 4th.

With Fluminense he was in the final of the Copa Libertadores 2008 and scored a total of seven goals in the tournament, four of them in the finals against LDU Quito from the Ecuadorian capital Quito . After a 2: 4 in the first leg, it was 3: 1 in front of 86,000 spectators after 90 minutes in the second leg. Fluminense lost the subsequent penalty shootout, in which the opposing goalkeeper Neves shot, with 1: 3.

On March 26, 2008 Neves made his debut in the Brazilian national soccer team when he was substituted on in a game against Sweden. In August 2008 he won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games . He was used in five games and scored two goals.

On August 30, 2008, he moved to Hamburger SV for an estimated 7.5 million euros , where he signed a contract until 2013. Dissatisfied with his reservist status there, Neves wanted a club change during the 2008/09 winter break, which led him back to Fluminense on loan for six months. Shortly thereafter, the Saudi club Al-Hilal announced the commitment of Neves from July 2009 for four years.

On January 13, 2011, Neves was loaned to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro for a year . With the club he won the state championship of Rio de Janeiro after a final win on penalties against CR Vasco da Gama and was fourth in the national championship.

In June 2011 he came in a friendly against Romania for his second appearance in the national team. He was part of the squad for the subsequent Copa América , in which he did not get a train.

In mid-January 2012 he moved to Fluminense FC after a long tug of war with Flamengo. The transfer fee to Al-Hilal is reported to be 15 million Réis (6.56 million euros). With Fluminense he won the Rio State Championship and the Brazilian Championship in the same year.

For the 2015/16 season, Thiago Neves is moving from al-Hilal to al-Jazira in Abu Dhabi for around 11 million euros . In his first season he scored eight goals in 25 league games and put on eight more.

On January 5, 2017, the Cruzeiro EC from Belo Horizonte announced the commitment of Neves for three years. In an interview on October 3, 2017, Neves announced that he would like to end his active career with his first club Paraná Clube . In the same conversation, he also said that he assumed that his move to Saudi Arabia would be the end of his career in the national team, since the games there are not as easy to watch for the national coaches as those in Europe.

A year later, al-Hilal's renewed interest in Neves became known. The club offered a transfer fee of 11 million Brazilian reals , which was rejected by the Cruzeiros Presidium. In September 2018, Neves was honored for playing the 100th game for Cruzeiro. The semi-final against Palmeiras São Paulo on September 12, 2018 in the Copa do Brasil 2018 is considered the 100th game . In January 2019, Neves' contract with Cruzeiro was extended to the end of 2020. The contract includes an option for a one-year extension should Neves play at least 40 games in 2020. After making a public party visit while recovering from an injury, Neves was released from Cruzeiro.

Neves has been under contract with Grêmio Porto Alegre since January 2020 .
