Thiruvandarkoil ( Tamil திருவாண்டார்கோயில் IAST Tiruvāṇṭārkoyil ) or Thiruvandarkovil is a larger village with around 7,200 inhabitants in the southern Indian union territory of Puducherry . There is a medieval Shiva temple near the village .
location
Thiruvandarkoil is located approx. 19 km (driving distance) west of the city of Puducherry or approx. 21 km east of Viluppuram at an altitude of approx. 25 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is warm to hot; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months from July to December.
population
The vast majority of the almost exclusively Tamil- speaking residents of the place are Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The female share of the population is approx. 3% higher than the male.

history
How far back the history of the place goes is unclear; Since around the middle of the 9th century, the place belonged to the dominion of the Chola dynasty. According to an inscription, the temple can be dated to around 930; other inscriptions come from the late Chola period.
Attractions
The Panchanadishvara temple, which is enclosed by a wall and consecrated to the Hindu god Shiva , is located on an artificial lake ; It consists of a small, laterally closed vestibule ( mandapa ) and the cella ( garbhagriha ) with a tower structure ( vimana ) that is stepped back several times and covered by a thin layer of stucco with pseudo-architecture and figural decorations and a "umbrella dome" with a vase ( kalasha ). In the niches of the outer wall made of granite stones and articulated by pilasters, there are several very high quality figures of gods; A little Nandi bull rests in front of the entrance to the vestibule .
