background

On August 26, 2009, Channel 4 announced that they had commissioned the four-part television drama This Is England '86 . The miniseries was written by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne . Meadows said:

“When I finished This Is England , I had a wealth of material and unused ideas that I felt very keen to take further - audiences seemed to really respond to the characters we created and out of my longstanding relationship with Film4 and Channel 4 the idea for a television serial developed. Not only did I want to take the story of the gang broader and deeper, I also saw in the experiences of the young in 1986 many resonances to now - recession, lack of jobs, sense of the world at a turning point. Whereas the film told part of the story, the TV serial will tell the rest. "

“By the time I was finishing This Is England , I had a lot of material and unused ideas that I was really keen to take forward - the audience really liked the characters, and we came up with the idea of a TV series based on my relationships with Film4 and Channel 4. Not only did I want to make the story of the gang wider and deeper, I also saw that the youth's 1986 experience bears many similarities to today's - recession , unemployment, the world at a turning point. While the film told parts, the series told the rest. "

- Shane Meadows

Set in Mexico during the 1986 World Cup , Chris de Burgh was number one on the music charts and there were 3.4 million unemployed in the UK. While Shaun (still played by Thomas Turgoose) is writing his final exam, he realizes that he has to find his way in this world. His friends - including Woody, Lol, Smell, Gadget and Meggie - are still there looking for love, entertainment and work. Meadows stated that Combo (played again by Stephen Graham) is coming back, that Milky's fate will be solved, and that Woody and Lol's wedding will be canceled. He would also like to play a possible second season in 1990.

View of Gleadless Valley

On January 6, 2010, Meadows wrote on his website that the project would be called This Is England '86 . Milky is alive, Woody has a factory job and wants to marry Lol. He later added that scooters like Vespa and Lambretta were used in the series to represent the scooter boy movement in the mid and late 1980s. This is the first time Meadows has cast a female lead. The series focuses on Lol while the supporting cast is made up of the old gang. Meadows stated that what happens will change Lol forever, and that it includes some of the toughest scenes of his career.

Much of the film was filmed in the Gleadless Valley area of Sheffield . Filming was completed on June 5th. First production photos and trailers have been published on the official Channel 4 page.

The series ran on Channel 4 from September 7th to September 28th, 2010.
