Thomas Gousset

Thomas-Marie-Joseph Gousset (born May 1, 1792 in Montigny-lès-Cherlieu , † December 22, 1866 in Reims ) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman, Archbishop of Reims and cardinal .

Life

He was the eighth child of the farmer Thomas Gousset (1754-1837) and his wife Marguerite Bournom (1759-1845). In his youth he was a farm worker before he began studying in Besancon, where he in 1817 to Dr. theol. received his doctorate . He was ordained a priest on July 22, 1817. After a few months as vicar, in 1818 he became a professor of dogmatics and moral theology at the Besançon seminary. He held this position until 1830. On August 22, 1830 he became vicar general in Besançon. The Académie de Besançon accepted him on January 28, 1831.

On February 1, 1836, Thomas Gousset was appointed Bishop of Périgueux . He received his episcopal ordination on March 6th of the same year by the Archbishop of Paris Hyacinthe-Louis de Quélen ; Co - consecrators were Charles de Forbin-Janson , Bishop of Nancy , and Eugène de Mazenod , Apostolic Visitator of the Mission of Tunis . On July 13, 1840, he was appointed Archbishop of Reims. There he founded an academy and the archiepiscopal library. On December 2, 1845 he became papal assistant to the throne

Pope Pius IX created him in the consistory of September 30, 1850 as cardinal priest. He received the red hat and San Callisto as the titular church on April 10, 1851.

He died in Reims and was buried in the Saint-Thomas church there, which he had built. His heart was buried in a golden urn in one of the two bronze pillars of the abbot's chapel in Reims Cathedral.
