Thomas Abeking (born November 29, 1909 in Berlin ; † March 24, 1986 in Bonn ) was a German graphic artist, illustrator and architect.

Life

Thomas Abeking was born in Berlin in 1909 as the son of the painter couple Hermann and Elly Abeking . Abeking began his training with a degree in graphics and architecture at the School of Applied Arts and Crafts in Berlin-Charlottenburg and with various private teachers. After completing his studies, he continued to live in Berlin.

In the 1930s and 1940s he made numerous drawings for the Transart depictions , a printing process that was new at the time, in which several transparent foils made of clear cellulose were printed on both sides to create a brochure. This practically made it possible to see inside a machine or a part of the body with an X-ray view if these foils were congruent on top of one another. Depending on the view of the left or right side, viewing from below (l) or above (r) was possible. For this process he created representations of engines, cars, ships, machines and devices as well as anatomical works and cityscapes. Most of these documentations were published by Transart - Aktiengesellschaft für Zellglas-Artprint in Berlin W 50.

From 1937 to 1947 he was also responsible for advertising and documentation at Volkswagen GmbH . 1945 to 1947 he was the second head of the office for urban development in Berlin-Kreuzberg . From 1946 he was a member of the Professional Association of Visual Artists Berlin. In 1947 he founded a building and art publisher in Berlin. In 1952 the move to Frankfurt a. Main, 1953 to Cologne. Industrial advertising continued to be his main field of activity. From 1956 he also worked for the German Armed Forces, he dealt with the creation of guidelines for technical documentation. From the 1970s he was based in Bonn-Bad Godesberg . At the same time as his advertising office, he founded the Thomas Abeking publishing house for technical documentation GmbH around 1978 , which employed around 20 people.

family

Thomas Abeking came from a family of artists. In addition to his parents, his sister Ortrud (1904–1977) first worked as an actress and then as a portrait and landscape painter. From 1904 the family owned Büdnereien 14/15 in Althagen on the Fischland as a summer residence . Here the family had a large circle of friends, including George Grosz . Thomas Abeking married on November 29, 1972 in Bonn-Bad Godesberg Freda Marie-Agnes Countess zu Dohna-Schlodien (* 1916 Königsberg; † 2011 Bonn), daughter of the legal scholar and politician Alexander Graf zu Dohna-Schlodien . After 1945 she worked in Berlin and from 1952 to 1982 in Bonn as a photographer, portraitist and theater photographer.
