Thomas Jennefelt
Thomas Jennefelt (* 1954 in Huddinge near Stockholm ) is a Swedish composer.
Live and act
Thomas Jennefelt studied composition from 1974 to 1980 at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm with Gunnar Bucht and Arne Mellnäs. Since then he has been working as a freelance composer. From 1994 to 2000 he was President of the Society of Swedish Composers. Since 2004 he has been Vice President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In the compositions of Thomas Jennefelt, his interest in the close word-tone relationship in the tradition of the composers of the Reformation such as Heinrich Schütz is clearly noticeable. Jennefelt draws on his own texts as well as various literary sources. His music therefore has a strong vocal profile, from choral music to opera.
Warning to the rich (1977) for mixed choir was an early hit and continues to be performed around the world. O Domine (1983), which is based on the Requiem texts, is also widely used. With the same Heine poems that Robert Schumann used, he composed the Dichterliebe for the Swedish Radio Choir in 1990 for mixed choir and soloists . Music for a big church , which emerged in the same year, opens the way to a new, more minimalist choir style, which he also uses in the Villarosa sequenses (1993-2001, Villarosa sarialdi, Aledi floriasti, Claviante brilioso etc.).
Thomas Jennefelt works with internationally outstanding vocal ensembles such as the Swingle Singers , the Dutch Chamber Choir, the Bavarian Radio Choir , the Athesinus Consort Berlin and the Vocalconsort Berlin. In 1990 his opera The Jesters Hamlet , based on a play by the Swedish author Per Christian Jersild , premiered at the Gothenburg Opera . This is a paraphrase of Hamlet , focused on the actors / fools who appear in the original play. In 1994 the chamber opera The Vessel premiered in Copenhagen . The composer also wrote the libretto for this. The plot reflects different aspects of travel.
Jennefelt's works include pieces such as Music by a mountain (1992) for orchestra, Black tracks (1990) for strings and Music for a builder of a cathedral (1984). A remarkable composition is the Concerto for Trumpet and Strings Stockholm in May (2000) written for Håkan Hardenberger , premiered in October 2000. In December 2004 his opera Sports & Leisure premiered at the Royal Stockholm Opera. In 2008, An die Hoffnung by Friedrich Hölderlin for ten a cappella voices was premiered at the Rheingau Music Festival .
In 2009 his Dixit Dominus for soloists, choir and string orchestra was premiered. In 2010 the Swedish Radio Choir and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra performed Nocturnal singing for the first time. On September 15, 2011, the music theater became Paulus . The fearful waiting of the creature , for actors, double quartet, 2 saxophones and percussion based on the libretto by Christian Lehnert premiered in Berlin with the participation of the Athesinus Consort Berlin and the Lilienfelder Cantorei Berlin in the St. Elisabeth Church. The role of Paul was played by Jens Schäfer .
Thomas Jennefelt's works are published by Gehrmans Musikförlag and the traditional publishing house Warner / Chappell Music, which is part of the Warner Music Group .
