Career

As an A-youth, Thomas Lander led FC Schalke 04 as captain of the team to the final of the German youth championship in 1976/77 . In the final, he and his teammates, including Mathias Schipper , Ulrich Bittcher and Uwe Höfer , played the Rot-Weiss Essen representative . After just six minutes, Lander and his team were behind with a goal from Jürgen Sekula in the Herner Stadion at Strünkede Castle . The tide turned and the squires, who were hired by coach Uli Maslo , won in the end 5: 1; Lander contributed the opening goal to make it 2-1. In the following season he was in the professional squad and was used in two games in the Bundesliga . In both games he was substituted on by coach Friedel Rausch . Both times were played against rivals from the Ruhr area, in the first against VfL Bochum . Lander scored the winning goal in the 89th minute to make it 2-1 after standing on the field for 13 minutes. His second appearance was against Borussia Dortmund . The derby was won 4-2. In the following two years, Lander made 19 more games and scored two goals for Schalke. He then moved to the 2nd Bundesliga at Preußen Münster . Under coach Werner Biskup , Lander was immediately a regular player, even in Lander's second season at Münster under coaches Günter Exner and Rudi Faßnacht that did not change. At the end of the 1980/81 season , for the time being the last season of the two-pronged 2. Bundesliga, Münster had to move into the third division. Lander stayed in the league since he moved to Rot-Weiss Essen. With Essen he played in the 2nd Bundesliga until relegation in the 1983/84 season .
