Inspired by his roots in East Germany , Neumann is interested in the architectural and historical legacy of the communist Eastern Bloc . This is how the series “homo sovieticus” (1998–2002), “Pictures from Utopia” (2003–2005), “Unbuilt City” (2007), “1984 News from Utopia” (2003), and “Star flight and apple blossom” ( 2013). As a curator, Neumann organized the project “Congress of Futurologists”, which took place in 2007 and 2008 in the planned socialist cities of Eisenhüttenstadt and Dunaújváros . With “Monument for a City” (2006) Neumann began his work on large-scale installations that combine photography and sculpture. Photography since 1994" took place in 2020 in the Weltkunstzimmer in Düsseldorf.

Influenced by a two-year stay in Japan , Neumann began to be interested in landscape photography. This was followed by the series “Mori” (from 2012) and “Ishi” (from 2013), which were incorporated into the book “The Japanese Series” (2015). In response to the triple catastrophe in Fukushima in 2011 , he published the book "March Days" in Revolver Verlag.
