Thomas Pichler (botanist)

Thomas Pichler (born October 12, 1828 in St. Johann im Walde , † August 30, 1903 in Lienz ) was an Austrian botanist .

Life

Thomas Pichler, born in 1828, initially worked as a mountain guide . On the initiative of Archduke Johann , which it when setting up its Alpine Garden in Gastein had been recommended as an aid Pichler came to training in botany and horticulture to the Joanneum of Graz , where he acquired such a large botanical knowledge that with important he scientists of his Time to get in touch. As a result, Pichler undertook collecting trips for botanical institutes or as a companion for scientists in Austria, Italy , Russia , Persia , the Balkans and the Arab countries. Several of the plant species he discovered and the genus Pichleria from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) were named in his honor.
