Life

Reimann was born in Weimar as the fourth of five siblings. He spent his childhood in Weimar and Dresden. After his school education, he completed an apprenticeship as a metalworker with a high school diploma. In 1975 he began studying design for glass, porcelain and ceramics with Brigitte Mahn-Diedering at the Halle University of Industrial Design, Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale) , which he completed with a diploma in 1980. During his studies he made friends with the Dresden painter Rudolf Nehmer , who brought him closer to the life and work of a freelance artist and increased his interest in art. Thomas Reimann has been working as a designer in the Saxon glass industry since 1980, completing further vocational training as a glassmaker. During this time he made works of art out of glass, which were presented at exhibitions in the GDR and Hungary.

In 1990 he and his wife founded the art & design studio, Glashaus Weißer Hirsch Dresden. Since then he has been working as a freelance artist and got to know the painters, sculptors and glass artists Gretel and Erwin Eisch . A close friendship developed, which had a lasting impact on the work of the artists through joint exhibitions, projects and the exchange of ideas. In 2001 Thomas Reimann opened his summer atelier and show workshop for "Glass + Stone Sculpture" at Stolpen Castle in Saxony . This was followed by the exhibition “45 Glass Heads” and the exhibition organization “DA BIN I” in art'otel Dresden and Pillnitz Castle ; the organization of the meeting of European glass artists in the Eisch-Glashütte Frauenau ; the “Glass + Stone” exhibition in Hanover; a trip to the USA with Erwin Eich, the first glass print being produced by Harvey Littleton in North Carolina; further exhibitions in Europe, works for private and public collections and art projects in public spaces.

Quotes on exhibitions by Thomas Reimann

“Reimann compressed, filtered and the viewer got to see the extract. Apt, sometimes provocative, sometimes gaudy and shrill, exalted or melancholy, he met with great interest with his heads, and when I got to know the versatile artist, but also the self-deprecating craftsman Reimann, we immediately became sympathetic. Because I immediately noticed that Thomas' works are inextricably linked with his view of the world. A. Rodin once aptly said: 'A person with open eyes whose spirit penetrates the essence of those who exist'. This absolutely applies to Thomas. Cheerful, ironic and always on the lookout. A keenly analyzing contemporary to whom nothing human is alien. I am also a little proud that I am the only living glass head among the famous immortals. But as you know, posterity does not weave any boundaries for mimes, and so I already enjoy my 'glass niche' during my lifetime ”. ( Tom Pauls , 2006)

“When he draws, photographs, shapes and casts, then he does it because he feels like it, because he wants to know, not because he wants to show it. That's how he is. And finally: If, in addition to all of these diverse own creations, he also presents those of his friends and colleagues to the public in sometimes highly regarded exhibitions or organizes specialist congresses, then it becomes clear that he is a communicative networker, an open colleague and a loyal friend - an artist who does not see himself as a star, but always as part of the whole. It is fascinating to see a person working who has nothing in front of him, but rather carries so much in him, of course, more lucrative for him might be a somewhat louder self-expression. ”( Igor A. Jenzen , Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden , 2006)
